MINNESOTA UNITED FC


Minnesota United was the name of a North American Soccer League (NASL) from the early 1970s. In 2015, the new Minnesota United FC adopted the same name and began play in Major League Soccer in 2017. The club entered the league as the 22nd team in MLS. It is one of four professional sports teams in the Minneapolis, Minnesota, area.

The club’s ownership group is led by Bill McGuire, the former CEO of UnitedHealth Group, a Minnesota-based company. Other members of the ownership group include the Pohlad family which owns the Minnesota Twins, Glen Taylor who owns the NBA’s Timberwolves, and Wendy Carlson Nelson of the Carlson Company, also based in Minnesota.

Fans can watch Minnesota United FC games on TV and stream games from a number of different platforms. National broadcasts are shown on ESPN and ESPN2. Minnesota United FC began playing in TCF Bank Stadium in 2017. That is the home of the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers football team. In the spring of 2019, the club moved into its current home, Allianz Field, which is a soccer-specific stadium located in Saint Paul. Allianz Field can seat 19,400 for Minnesota United FC home matches.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY


The Minnesota United franchise experienced some success when they were a member of the North American Soccer League. Minnesota won the 2011 NASL championship series after finishing sixth in the regular season standings. The club then finished first in the NASL regular season standings in 2014 and third in 2015. Since the franchise joined MLS in 2017, the club’s best finish is fourth in the Western Conference in 2019 and 2020 and seventh overall in 2019. That same year, the Minnesota was the runner-up for the U.S. Open Cup.

Forward Darwin Quintero is the franchise’s all-time leading scorer with 27 total goals. Quintero played just two seasons in Minnesota (2018 and 2019). He will likely be surpassed at some point by current Minnesota midfielder Kevin Molino who has 25 total goals and has been with the club since 2017. Quintero is also the career leader in assists for Minnesota with 22. Molino will probably pass him in this category too. Molino is third currently with a total of 19 assists.

The top goalkeeper in franchise history is Vito Mannone of Italy. Playing on loan for Minnesota in 2019, Mannone faced 201 shots and recorded 151 saves in 40 matches. He had a total of 11 clean sheets. Bobby Shuttlesworth played for the team from 2017 to 2019 and has the most saves in franchise history with 224. He had a total of eight clean sheets during his three seasons with Minnesota United FC.
