ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

The Arizona Diamondbacks were established in 1998 along with the Tampa Bay Rays in the last round of MLB expansion. The team had almost instant success winning an NL West Division title in just its second season (1999). The Diamondbacks also became the fastest expansion team to win a World Series when they did so in 2001.

In 22 seasons, the D-Backs have finished last in the NL West just five times. They have been to the postseason six times and claim one World Series title (2001). Arizona has four division titles and also made the playoffs in 2017 as an MLB wild card.

Nationally televised Diamondbacks games are shown on ESPN, FOX Sports, and the MLB Network. Regional games, which include most of the D-Backs complete schedule, are available to watch on FOX Sports Arizona. In market, games are available for live streaming on the FOX Sports GO app. Out of market, viewers can use MLB.TV to watch Arizona games.

HOME OF THE D-BACKS

The Diamondbacks moved into the brand new Bank One Ballpark in 1998. When Bank One merged with JPMorgan Chase & Co., the stadium became known as Chase Field. It was the first stadium in the U.S. that featured a retractable roof over a natural grass surface. That surface was replaced with synthetic turf in 2019. Chase Field seats 48,686 for D-Backs games.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

The Diamondbacks won the NL West in just their second season of play but lost in the division series to the Mets. Arizona has won a total of five NL West Division titles (1999, 2001, 2002, 2007, and 2011). The D-Backs also made the playoffs in 2017 as an MLB wild card.

Arizona won one MLB league championship series and that was in 2001. That year, the Diamondbacks won their only NL pennant and defeated the New York Yankees in seven games to capture the only World Series title in franchise history.

ARIZONA’S BEST

Pitcher Randy Johnson was the first player in MLB history to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with the Diamondbacks logo depicted on his plaque. Johnson spent a total of eight seasons with Arizona and was a big reason for the team’s early success. He won the Cy Young award four seasons in a row (1999-2002) and was the MVP of the 2001 World Series. Nine times Johnson led the league in strikeouts and in 2002 he won the pitching Triple Crown. Johnson’s 4,875 career strikeouts is the second-most in MLB history behind only Nolan Ryan.

Luis Gonzalez spent eight of his 19 MLB seasons with Arizona. He was a five-time All-Star and he will best be remembered for his game-winning hit in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. Gonzalez singled over the outstretched glove of Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter driving in the winning run. Gonzalez would finish his career with 2,591 hits, 354 home runs, and a career batting average of .283.

Pitcher Curt Schilling grew up in the Phoenix area and wound up playing for the Diamondbacks from 2000 to 2003. Schilling, along with Johnson, proved to be one of the most successful pitching duos in MLB history. Schilling was an All-Star in two of his four seasons in Arizona and was also the MVP of the 2001 World Series.
