SEATTLE MARINERS

The Seattle Mariners were one of two expansion teams that joined MLB in 1977. Like many expansion teams, Seattle struggled initially and did field a team with a winning record until 1991. The Mariners first division title came in 1995.

The Mariners have struggled for most of their existence. In 43 seasons in MLB, Seattle has posted 29 losing seasons. The Mariners are one of six MLB teams that have never won a World Series championship. In fact, Seattle is the only team in MLB to never even play for a World Series title.

Despite the team’s lack of success, fans tune in to watch the Mariners on TV. They are featured on national broadcasts on FOX Sports, ESPN, and the MLB Network. Fans in the Seattle area can watch nearly the complete Mariners schedule on Root Sports Northwest and Seattle’s full schedule can be live streamed on MLB.TV.

HOME OF THE MARINERS

Seattle initially played in the Kingdome which also housed the NFL’s Seahawks. In 1999, the Mariners moved into T-Mobile Park located in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood. The ballpark was originally known as Safeco Field. In 2018 the naming rights for the stadium were sold to T-Mobile. The ballpark seats 47,929 fans for Mariners games.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

It took 19 years for the Mariners to win their first division championship – the AL West title – in 1995. Seattle had never finished higher than third in the division until 1995. The Mariners had a nice run of seven seasons from 1995 to 2001 where they won the franchise’s only three division crowns. In those seven seasons, the Mariners never finished lower than third in the division.

Seattle has never won an MLB league championship series. The club did earn a playoff spot in 2000 as an MLB wild card. The Mariners finished second in their division that season and won their AL Division Series against the Chicago White Sox. They lost to the Yankees in six games in the ALCS.

THE MARINERS BEST

Any mention of the Mariners greatest players begins with “Junior,” or Ken Griffey Jr. He was the first pick of the Mariners in the 1989 MLB draft. Griffey played 13 of his 22 MLB seasons with Seattle. He was one of the game’s most prolific long ball hitters ending his career with 630 home runs, which is seventh-best all-time. Griffey was an All-Star in 10 of his seasons in Seattle and was named the 1997 AL MVP. He led the AL in home runs four times all as a member of the Mariners.

Edgar Martinez played his entire 18-year MLB career in Seattle. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019, Martinez is one of just 18 MLB players to record a career batting average of at least .300 (.312), on-base percentage of .400, and a slugging percentage of .500 in 5,000 or more plate appearances. Martinez was a seven-time All-Star, a five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, and was the AL batting champion twice (1992, 1995).

Pitcher Randy Johnson spent 10 seasons in Seattle. He was a five-time All-Star while a Mariner and won the first of his five Cy Young Awards pitching for Seattle in 1995.
