The NHL and its history


NHL, National Hockey League, was started in 1917 as a national league in Canada. It was in 1924 the league expanded to USA and took its form as we’re used to today. The number of teams competing in the NHL has varied throughout the years, from only four teams when it all began to 31 teams as it is today. Between 1942 and 1967 the NHL consisted of six teams, called the “Original Six”. The Original Six includes Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers.

The NHL as we are used to know it consists of 31 teams spread out over USA and Canada. As from the season 2021-22 there will be 32 teams when Seattle Krakens joins the world’s best hockey league.
The teams are divided into two different conferences, West and Eastern. In the Eastern Conference there are two divisions, Atlantic and Metropolitan, and in the Western Conference there are another two divisions, Central and Pacific.
A normal NHL seasons starts in early October and ends in April before it’s time for the best teams to proceed to the Stanley Cup. The Stanley Cup finish in June and a winner is crowned.
Each team in the NHL plays 82 games in the regular season, in the Stanley Cup playoffs teams face each other in a best of seven games format.

NHL Draft


The NHL draft is an event taking place every year before a new season starts where every team gets to pick new players. The order in which the teams are going to pick players will be decided by a combination of different performances. The teams who performed worst in the previous season will get the chance to pick first. By having this structure when determine the order of which the clubs get to pick players, the NHL avoids a potential group of teams becoming too dominant.
