DETROIT TIGERS

The Detroit Tigers were founded in 1894 as a member of the old minor league, the Western League. When the league renamed itself the American League and became a major league, the Tigers became the only Western League team still in its original city. The Tigers are the oldest continuous one name, one city franchise in the American League.

The Tigers have enjoyed their fair share of success through the years. They were members of the AL East until becoming a member of the AL Central when MLB restructured. The Tigers have had a number of different homes in the city of Detroit. Despite their early beginning, the Tigers did not win their first World Series until 1935.

Fans can watch nearly the Tigers complete schedule on FOX Sports Detroit, which broadcasts most of the Tigers’ games. Detroit is also part of several national broadcasts each year. Those games can be watched on FOX Sports and the MLB Network. Tigers fans can also stream games via the MLV.TV app.

HOME OF THE TIGERS

Detroit bounced around the city playing in Boulevard Park, Bennett Park, and Burns Park before landing at the old Tiger Stadium. In 1999, the Tigers moved out and closer to the downtown city center to Comerica Park. The stadium was another of the “retro-classic” ballparks built in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Comerica Park is named for the bank that was founded in Detroit but since moved to Dallas. The stadium holds 41,083 fans for Tigers games.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

The Tigers have a history of success with an all-time winning percentage over .500. Detroit has won four World Series titles. The first came in 1935 and the most recent was in 1984. The other two were won in 1945 and 1968.

The Tigers have won seven division titles. Three came as a member of the AL East (1972, 1984, and 1987). The other four came as members of the AL Central (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014).

Detroit also claims 11 American League pennants: 1907, 1908, 1909, 1934, 1935, 1940, 1945, 1968, 1984, 2006, and 2012. The Tigers made the playoffs as a MLB wild card in 2006 and advanced to the World Series where they lost to St. Louis.

THE BEST OF THE TIGERS

He debuted for Detroit in 1905 and by the time his career ended in the late 1920s, Ty Cobb was, and still is, considered by many the greatest baseball player of all-time. He still holds numerous MLB records to this day including highest career batting average (.367), most career batting titles (12), and many others. He was the youngest player to ever reach 4,000 hits and score 2,000 runs. Cobb won the Triple Crown in 1909 and the AL MVP in 1911. He played 22 seasons in Detroit.

Hank Greenberg was considered one of the greatest sluggers of his era. He was a five-time All-Star and led the AL in homers and RBIs four times each. Twice, he was the AL MVP winning in 1935 and 1940, the same years he led Detroit to World Series titles.
