Home of the Marlins
The Marlins originally shared Joe Robbie Stadium – now known as Hard Rock Stadium – with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. In 2012, the team moved into its new home, Marlins Park, which is located on the site of the former Orange Bowl. Marlins Park is the sixth MLB stadium with a retractable roof. It is the smallest stadium, by capacity, in MLB holding just 36,742 spectators for Marlins games.
History of the Marlins
As mentioned, the Marlins have never won a division title. They came close twice. The first was in 1997 when Miami finished 92-70 and in second place in the NL East. The Marlins also finished second in 2003 with a record of 91-71. Those remain the two best seasons in franchise history.
Miami made the postseason in each of their years. The Marlins have won the World Series every time they have qualified for the postseason. They defeated the Indians in seven games in 1997 and beat the Yankees in 2003 in six games to claim the Marlins two World Series titles.
With a relatively short history and not much postseason success, the Marlins have still had some outstanding players through the years. One was Gary Sheffield whose longest stint with a MLB team during his 22-year career came during his five-plus-year stay with the Marlins from 1993 to 1998. Sheffield was a three-time All-Star with the Marlins. He hit 42 home runs in 1996 and then led the team to the World Series victory the following year.
Jeff Conine came to be known as “Mr. Marlin” for his history with the franchise. Conine was selected by the Marlins in 1992 MLB expansion draft. He was the team’s first true star earning trips to the All-Star game in 1994 and 1995. Conine was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1995 MLB All-Star game, but the real highlight of his journeyman baseball career was 1997 and 2003. Conine did two stints with the Marlins. The first was from 1993 to 1997 and the second from 2003 to 2005. Conine was a member of the Marlins for both of the franchise’s World Series victories.
