Home of the Pacers
The original Pacers of the ABA began play at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum in 1967 and played there until 1974 when the team moved into the Market Square Arena. Indiana spent a quarter century there before moving into their current home, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, in 1999. The Pacers’ home seats 17,923 for home games.
History of the Pacers
The Pacers experienced almost immediate success upon entry into the ABA. Indiana won its first division title in 1968-69, its second season, before going all the way to the ABA Finals and losing to the Oakland Oaks. Indiana then won three ABA titles in the next four years. The Pacers made the postseason in each of its nine seasons in the ABA. The team struggled after merging into the NBA in 1976-77 making the NBA playoffs just twice in their first 13 seasons. Since the 1989-90 season, Indiana has been a consistent postseason participant only missing the playoffs six times. Indiana has won nine division titles – three in the ABA and six in the NBA. The 2000 Pacers won the Eastern Conference title and are the only Indiana team to play for an NBA championship.
Reggie Miller is the Pacers all-time leader scorer and holds several other career and single-season records for the franchise. Miller played his entire 19-year NBA career with Indiana. He was a five-time All-Star and finished his career with 25,279 points. When Miller retired in 2005, he held the NBA record for most 3-pointers made in a career (2,560). Miller was an outstanding shooter. He led the league in free throw accuracy in five different seasons. Mel Daniels was a 6-foot-9-inch center who spurned the NBA for the ABA and the Minnesota Muskies. He was acquired in a trade by Indiana in 1968 and would go on to win two ABA MVP awards. Daniels was a member of all three Pacers ABA championship teams. Daniels would play his 10-year professional career in the ABA ending with averages of 18.4 points and 14.9 rebounds per game. Rik Smits was a 7-foot-4-inch center who played 13 NBA seasons, all in Indiana. He is the Pacers second-leading scorer behind Miller. He is also third on the Pacers career rebounds list and second in blocked shots.
