What are the MLB Divisions and Teams

Major League Baseball, MLB, is without doubt regarded as the best baseball league in the world. With MLB being the undisputed no. 1 baseball league globally, it’s also the league where we find all the best players. There are 30 teams competing in the MLB, 29 from the US and 1 from Canada. The league is divided into two conferences, where each conference consists of three divisions.

American League
East – Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays
Central – Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Twins
West – Houston Astros, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers

National League
East – Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals
Central – Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals
West – Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants

The regular MLB season normally begins in late March/early April and runs through late September/early October. The teams play 162 games each during the regular season, which is more than most other sports leagues do. Of the 162 games, most are played versus teams in the same division. Additionally, each team has a number of away series where they face teams from the other league. A team normally plays up to five or seven times per week making the MLB one of the most challenging and intense leagues in the world with almost no time to rest between the matches.

When the regular season is finished, 10 teams move on to the postseason Playoffs. The 10 teams include six division winners and four wild cards. The wild cards are two teams from each league that’ve the best win-loss record and aren’t division winners.

The postseason series starts with two wild card games between the four wild card teams, one game with wild cards from the American League and one from the National League. These two matches are played in a best-of-one-game format, compared to the later stages of the Playoffs which are played in a best-of-five or best-of-seven games format. When the winners of the American League Championship Series and the National League Championship Series have been decided it’s time for the MLB World Series. The MLB World Series is the final series, played in a best-of-seven-games format.

All-Star game and the draft

The All-Star game is an annual game held during the MLB season, normally in mid-July. This is a much-appreciated exhibition game where some of the best players in the league get to show off their skills. Two teams, one from the American League and one from the National League, are put together and led by the previous MLB World Series managers.

The MLB draft is an event where the teams get to draft some of the most talented college players. The order in which the teams get to pick is decided by the teams' most recent season records. The team who finished last in the last season gets to pick first while the champions get to pick last.
