MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES

The Minnesota Timberwolves joined the NBA in 1989 along with the Orlando Magic as one of two expansion teams that year. The Minneapolis area had not had a professional basketball team since the Lakers left in 1960.

The Timberwolves struggled early as many expansion teams do. The team’s performance changed with the acquisition of Kevin Garnett in the 1995 NBA Draft. Minnesota would make the postseason in eight straight seasons and win the franchise’s only division title. Since that playoff streak, Minnesota has been back to the postseason just once.

ESPN, ESPN+, ABC, and TNT all broadcast nationally televised Timberwolves games. Fans can watch regional games on TV on FOX Sports North. They can also watch via live stream using the FOX Sports GO app or by going to NBA.tv.

HOME OF THE TIMBERWOLVES

During the Timberwolves first season in the NBA, the team played at the old Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The Target Center opened in 1990 as the new home of the Timberwolves. The team has played there ever since. The Target Center seats 18,798 T-Wolves fans for home games.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

Minnesota’s history is not filled with great success. The Timberwolves failed to win more than 29 games for their first six seasons in the league. They finally made the playoffs in 1996-97 and had their first winning season in 1997-98.

The Timberwolves have won one division championship. That was during the 2003-04 season. It is also the only season in which Minnesota advanced past the first round of the playoffs. The Timberwolves made it to the Western Conference finals before losing 4-2 to the Lakers.

Minnesota has made the postseason nine times. The team’s overall playoff series record is just 2-9.

BEST OF THE TIMBERWOLVES

Kevin Garnett was the fifth player chosen in the 1995 NBA draft. He was the first player selected straight out of high school since 1975. Garnett spent 14 seasons with the Timberwolves and is the franchise’s all-time leader in most every statistical category. He is No. 1 in points (19,201), rebounds (10,718), assists (4,216), steals (1,315), and blocked shots (1,590). Garnett was selected to 15 All-Star Games and was the 2003 All-Star Game MVP. He was the league MVP in 2004, the year he led Minnesota to the conference finals. Garnett made an All-NBA Team (First, Second, or Third) in nine different seasons. He was also well-known for his defensive ability and earned NBA All-Defensive First Team honors in nine different seasons. He led the NBA in rebounding in four straight seasons from 2004 to 2007. Garnett finished his career with averages of 17.8 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.

Karl-Anthony Towns was the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft. He has proven himself to be one of the league’s best big men in just five seasons. He has earned two All-Star selections after winning the 2016 NBA Rookie of the Year. Towns is slowly creeping up the Minnesota franchise leader boards. He is currently seventh in scoring with 11,899 points, third in rebounds (4,100), and second in blocked shots (510).
