NASHVILLE SC


The Nashville SC is one of the newest teams in Major League Soccer having been founded in 2017. The club began play in the USL, the second division of soccer in the US, and moved into MLS play in 2020. The team played its home matches at Nissan Stadium in 2020, but a soccer-specific stadium is currently under construction at the Nashville Fairgrounds.

The principal owner of the franchise is John Ingram, who owns Ingram Industries. Other investors and partial owners include the Turner family which owns the Dollar General Stores retail chain. Ingram bought a majority stake in DMD Soccer, the ownership group of Nashville SC, and made a formal bid to add an MLS franchise in Nashville in 2017.

Fans can watch Nashville SC games on TV and stream games from a number of different platforms. National broadcasts are shown on ESPN and ESPN2. Subscribers to ESPN+ can also watch on that network. HOME OF NASHVILLE SC


As mentioned, the current home of the Nashville franchise is Nissan Stadium which is the home of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. The 69,000-plus seat capacity stadium is much too large for Nashville SC. The soccer-specific stadium at the Nashville Fairgrounds is under construction. The work began in March 2020.

The new stadium, which is supposed to seat 30,000 fans, will be 100 percent privately funded. The club also announced $19 million in improvements to infrastructure in the immediate area of the stadium.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY


After finishing second in their conference and third overall in the USL (United Soccer League) in 2019, the franchise made the leap to MLS in 2020. In their inaugural season, the club finished with a record of 8-7-8. That mark earned a seventh-place finish in the Eastern Conference and 14th overall.

Nashville SC beat Inter Miami CF in the play-in match by a score of 3-0. That earned Nashville a date with the conference’s No. 2 seed, Toronto FC. Nashville pulled off a huge upset beating Toronto 1-0 before losing to Columbus Crew SC 2-0 in the conference semifinals.

BEST OF NASHVILLE SC


In their inaugural season, Nashville SC was led by Hany Mukhtar and Daniel Rios who each scored four goals. Randall Leal led the club in shots (41) and shots on goal (18) and was the team’s points’ leader with seven (three goals, four assists).

Goalkeeper Joe Willis played all 23 matches and gave up just 22 goals for a goals against average of 0.96. Willis made 69 saves and recorded nine shutouts on the season. His nine clean sheets was the best in MLS. Willis was a key part of a Nashville defense that conceded the third-fewest goals in the entire league. Nashville qualified for the MLS playoffs in 2020 where Willis recorded clean sheets in each of the team’s first two matches.
