Beckham had an option in his player contract which allowed him to purchase an expansion team for $25 million when he retired from play.

In 2018, it was announced the Miami Beckham United Group was awarded a franchise in the city. Beckham, who also serves as team president, is part of an ownership group – now called Miami Freedom Park LLC – that includes Marcelo Claure, Masasyoshi Son, and Jorge and Jose Mas.
