KANSAS CITY ROYALS
The Kansas City Royals were founded in 1969 as one of four MLB expansion teams that season. The teams’ name “Royals” was taken from the American Royal, a competition that includes a livestock show, horse show, rodeo, and championship barbecue held every year in Kansas City.
The Royals started quickly earning playoff berths seven times between 1976 and 1985. Then came the drought. Kansas City didn’t qualify for the MLB postseason in 28 consecutive seasons between 1986 and 2013. Despite that drought, the Royals do have two World Series titles to their credit (1985, 2015).
Royals fans can watch nearly the complete Kansas City schedule on FOX Sports Kansas City. The team is featured during the season on national broadcasts on FOX Sports and the MLB Network. Fans can watch without cable via live stream on the FOX Sports GO app or on MLB.TV.
HOME OF THE ROYALS
Since 1973, the Royals have played at Kauffman Stadium, known locally as the “K.” Originally known as Royals Stadium, it was named after the team’s founder Ewing Kauffman in 1993. It is the sixth-oldest stadium in MLB and, after its last major renovation in 2009, now seats 37,903 spectators for Kansas City Royals games.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
As noted, the Royals won four division titles in five years early in their existence. Kansas City won the AL West in 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1980. They also won the division in 1984 and 1985. The Royals also won the AL Central in 2015 for a total of seven division crowns.
The Royals won four AL league championships in 1980, 1985, 2014, and 2015 with the team winning MLB World Series titles in 1985 and again 30 years later in 2015. The Royals also made the postseason as an MLB wild card in 2014.
THE ROYALS BEST
George Brett first appeared for the Royals in 1973. When he retired after the 1993 season, he left as one of the game’s great hitters. Brett was a 13-time All-Star who won three AL batting titles (1976, 1980, and 1990). He was the AL MVP in 1980 and the MVP of the ALCS in 1985, the year he helped lead Kansas City to its first-ever World Series. Brett is still the only player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame wearing the Royals cap.
Brett played 1,914 career games with second baseman Frank White who played his entire 18-year career with the Royals. White was a five-time All-Star and also a member of that 1985 Royals’ World Series team. White won eight Gold Gloves and was the MVP of the 1980 ALCS.
Willie Wilson was drafted by Kansas City and spent the first 15 years of his 19-year MLB career with the Royals. He had originally planned to play football at the University of Maryland but was drafted by Kansas City in the first round of the 1974 MLB draft. Wilson played in two All-Star games (1982, 1983) and was also a member of the 1985 World Series championship team. He was the AL batting champion in 1982 and the AL stolen base leader in 197.
