LOS ANGELES ANGELS

The Los Angeles Angels were established in 1961 as one of two expansion teams in the American League (Minnesota was the other). The team was owned by the famous singing cowboy actor Gene Autry who named the team after the old minor league franchise of the Pacific Coast League.

The franchise has undergone a few name changes. They were the California Angels from 1965 to 1996. In 1997, they became the Anaheim Angels, then the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005 before going back to the original name in 2016.

The Angels appear on a number of national telecasts each year on FOX Sports, ESPN, and the MLB Network. In addition, fans in southern California can watch nearly the complete Angels schedule on FOX Sports West. Games can also be viewed via live stream on MLB.TV or the FOX Sports GO app.

HOME OF THE ANGELS

The Angels play in the fourth-oldest active MLB stadium, Angel Stadium. It opened in 1966 and was known then as Anaheim Stadium. The Angels spent their first four seasons playing in Dodger Stadium while Angel Stadium was being built. It is the second-oldest stadium in the American League behind Fenway Park. Angel Stadium seats 45,517 spectators.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

Even in their relatively short MLB history, the Angels can lay claim to nine AL West Division titles: 1979, 1982, 1986, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2014. The Angels also made the postseason in 2002 as an MLB wild card.

It was that season that the Angels captured their first and only American League pennant as well as their only World Series championship.

THE ANGELS BEST

The only player in the Baseball of Hall of Fame wearing the cap of the Angels is former OF and designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero. He played six seasons (2004 to 2009) in Los Angeles and was an All-Star selection in each of the first four of those seasons. In 2004, Guerrero hit .337, hit 39 home runs, and knocked in 126 runs. He earned the AL MVP award that season. He ended his 16-year MLB career with 449 home runs and a .318 batting average. Guerrero was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018.

Nolan Ryan was one of the greatest pitchers of the modern era. He spent eight of his 26 MLB seasons with the Angels where he was a five-time All-Star. Ryan led the majors in strikeouts 11 times. Seven of those seasons were when he was with the Angels. Ryan continues to be MLB’s all-time leader in career strikeouts with 5,714.

The Angels drafted Mike Trout in 2011 and, eventually, he will become one of the greats of all-time. In his nine MLB seasons thus far, Trout is an eight-time All-Star. He won the AL Rookie of the Year in 2012 and has won three AL MVPs already. In his first five full MLB seasons, Trout either won the AL MVP or was the runner-up. He is the youngest player in MLB history to reach 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases, doing so in the 2015 season when he was just 23 years old.
