Jacksonville Jaguars 2025 Season Preview: Star Players, Key Matchups & Where to Watch

Back-to-back nine-win seasons and years of progress for Trevor Lawrence were seemingly thrown out the window in 2024. 

A 4-13 record earned Jacksonville a top 5 pick in the draft, which they used to trade up and select Heisman Winner Travis Hunter, as one of the faces of a new era for the franchise. 

The front office and coaching staff got a revamp with the arrival of James Gladstone as GM and Liam Coen as head coach in early 2025. Fans will be hoping for a drastic change following the slow decline under Doug Pederson and the constant dysfunction of Trent Baalke as GM. 

Even if 2025 isn’t better, it should at least be different. There is cautious optimism going forward, as a fully healthy Trevor Lawrence is set to lead a revamped offense in 2025.

Nobody expects them to win this game, away from home against an elite offense. At best, this could be a legendary upset, while at worst, it will be a litmus test, helping determine just how far off the conference’s best Jacksonville is. 

🏈 Week 3 (Sept 21) - vs Houston Texans

Fresh off a win against the Bengals, Jacksonville will have to face the AFC South division champs. If they want to have any chance at a postseason place, they have to win their home game against the Texans. 

🏈 Week 5 (Oct 6) - vs Kansas City Chiefs

ESPN/ABC, 8:15 PM ET

Hosting the AFC Champs is not for the faint of heart, and facing them this early in the season won’t give this Jags team much time to ease into things. But this is their only primetime game of 2025; they’re going to have to put on a show. 

🏈 Week 7 (October 19) - vs Los Angeles Rams

NFL Network, NFL+, 9:30 AM ET

The Rams are playoff regulars, around the level that the Jags had hoped they’d be by this point. With their annual London game coming against such a tough side, Jacksonville may find it difficult to maintain its fortress abroad.

The final game of the season against a division rival will be crucial if they are in the playoff hunt, and if they aren’t, ending 2025 on a win could be hugely important for next season.

Just one primetime game on the schedule is a rather damning indictment of the state of the franchise. Last season, the Jags were fairly abysmal to watch, and will be hoping to change that perception against KC in week 5. History isn’t exactly on their side: they haven’t beaten the Chiefs since 2009. Meanwhile, their battle with the Rams will be their 14th game in London, with a 7-6 record in such contests, not the worst record for a team with the long-standing misfortune of the Jaguars.

🔥 On OffenseTrevor Lawrence – After regressing in 2024 while battling injury, this year is crucial for TLaw.Brian Thomas Jr. – Ideal build with scary speed, BTJ has it all. Year 2 could be even better.

Bhayshul Tuten – Rookie RB, who could prove more consistent than Etienne or Bigsby.

Travis Hunter – Great ball skills as a receiver, who should benefit from more attention on BTJ.

🛡️ On DefenseTravis Hunter – If he makes an impact on defense, it could drastically improve the Jags' unit. Travon Walker – After a tough rookie year, Walker has been a beast in the pass-rush. Josh Hines-Allen– One of the vets on this defense, he’s been through thick and thin in Duval.

Things quickly fell apart for the Jags in 2024, so starting off on the right foot could get this team back on track. There’s significantly more talent on this roster than in years past, and they play in one of the NFL’s weakest divisions. They won the AFC South with a 9-8 record in 2022; who's to say that a winning record in 2025 won’t do the same?
