UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League is the top tier continental club soccer tournament in Europe. The tournament has been played since 1955, though it took on its current name in 1992 when a number of major changes to the tournament’s format was made. One of them being the introduction of the round-robin stage which allowed more teams from different countries to join the tournament.

As of today, the UEFA Champions League comprises 32 teams in the group stage. To qualify for the tournament the teams have to either win their domestic league or finish high enough in the league table. The group stage is the opening stage of the tournament and is usually running from September through December. There are eight groups of four and each team plays six group stage matches, facing each of the other teams in the group twice. Next is the knockout stage where the two best teams from each group are drawn against an opponent from another group and play a best-of-two series. After the round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals there are two finalists left who will then play each other for the most prestigious club tournament trophy at a pre-determined stadium.

The winner of the tournament will later play the champion of the UEFA Europa League, the European second highest ranked club soccer tournament. This is a one-game final named the UEFA Super Cup and is normally played before the domestic leagues begin in August. The UEFA Champions League champions also qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup which is an intercontinental tournament between the best teams from the world’s different soccer associations.

The reason behind the tournament’s popularity and recognition is the fact that it features all of the best club soccer teams in the world. No other tournament will ever come close to the quality of the UEFA Champions League and it’s every players dream to win the tournament. There are endless unforgettable moments that have been played out in the tournament throughout the years and many more to come. If there is one soccer tournament to watch, we strongly recommend you to follow the UEFA Champions League.

Since its inaugural edition back in 1955 there has been a total of 22 different clubs lifting the trophy. Real Madrid is the most successful team with 13 European Cup and UEFA Champions League titles, followed by AC Milan (7), Bayern Munich (6) and Liverpool FC (6). Only two American players have ever won the UEFA Champions League, Jovan Kirovski (1996/97) and Christian Pulisic (2020/21).
