Top 3 Must-Watch Sporting Events This Weekend: August 2nd-3rd

Formula 1, MLB, and WNBA make up the most highly anticipated sporting events of the first weekend in August, but you’ll also find plenty more action to enjoy in our full schedule below.

Formula 1: Hungarian Grand Prix

  • Day: Sunday, August 3rd
  • Time: 9:00am ET
  • Channel: ESPN, ESPN+

Formula 1 returns to one of its most historic circuits, the Hungaroring. This twisty, technical track near Budapest is the perfect test of driver skill and patience, and will play host to the next installment of the battle between the two McLarens for the world championship. Oscar Piastri pipped Lando Norris on the first lap last week in Belgium, which ended up being the difference in a tight race between the two teammates. With 16 points now separating the two, Oscar Piastri will be eager to keep his nose in front around one of Formula 1’s most testing circuits.

While the McLarens do appear to be in a league of their own, there is plenty to fight for behind them. Ferrari and Mercedes are split by just 28 points in the constructors, and Red Bull are just 38 points behind the Mercs. With just under half the season to go, there is still plenty of action worth keeping an eye on, and every race is very important.

MLB: Detroit Tigers @ Philadelphia Phillies

  • When: Sunday, August 3rd
  • Time: 7:10 ET
  • Channel: ESPN, Fubo Sports US, MLB.TV

Sunday Night Baseball heads to Citizens Bank Park, as the surging Philadelphia Phillies host the Detroit Tigers. With the Tigers currently topping the American League Central and the Phillies riding second in the National League East, playoffs will be on both team’s minds, and they won’t want to drop a win here.

Detroit’s Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson have shown flashes of brilliance this season, but they will have their work cut out against Philadelphia’s elite rotation and power-hitting duo of Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber. Whether you are a die-hard fan or just tuning in for some prime-time fun, this regular season MLB clash will be a great addition to your weekend.

WNBA: Indiana Fever @ Seattle Storm

  • When: Sunday, August 3rd
  • Time: 3:00pm ET
  • Channel: ABC, ESPN+

Caitlin Clark might still be stuck on the sidelines, but the Indiana Fever are on a good run of form, and will be hoping to reach the playoff spots for just the second time since 2017. Kelsey Mitchell has been on a tear in recent weeks, scoring 20+ points in seven of her last eight games, culminating in a 35-point explosion on Sunday vs the Chicago Sky. Can they keep the good run of form going against the 15-11 Storm.
