The Road to UFC 300

However, this gala hasn't been straightforward for the UFC to put together. It was unclear for a long time who would participate in the main event, and there was wild speculation among UFC fans about who was worthy of being in the spotlight on such a night. UFC legend Jon Jones was offered a fight against the current interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, but declined due to still being injured since the fall of 2023. McGregor's name always hovers around during significant events, but this time it wasn't feasible due to the Irishman's leg injury, which needs to heal by summer, when his fight against Michael Chandler is expected to take place.

UFC 300 full fight card:

  • Alex Pereira (C) vs Jamal Hill #1 (Light Heavyweight, Title Match)

Alex Pereira made an immediate impact upon entering the UFC in 2021, and after just three wins in the organization, the Brazilian was granted an opportunity to vie for the title against his kickboxing rival, Israel Adesanya. The two had previously met twice in kickboxing matches, with Pereira emerging victorious on both occasions. Pereira shocked the world by defeating Adesanya once again and claiming the middleweight championship belt. They met once more four months later in a highly anticipated rematch, with Adesanya securing a spectacular finish this time around. Alex Pereira decided to move up a weight class following the loss, and after his bout against Jiri Prochazka, he became a champion again, this time in the light heavyweight division.   In this main event, the new champion faces Jamahal Hill, who has also reached the title, although he never defended it. Hill hasn't had a professional fight since January 2023 when he defeated former light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira. With four consecutive victories and seven wins via knockout in the UFC, Jamahal Hill is undoubtedly a threat to Pereiras title reign.

  • Zhang Weili (C) vs Yan Xiaonan #1 (Strawweight, Title Match)

Zhang Weili first reached the strawweight title when she defeated Jessica Andrade via knockout in a match that took place in 2019. However, Weili only defended the title once before losing to Rose Namajunas in 2020. After this, a rematch ensued, which Namajunas again won, but despite this, it didn't take long before Weili would challenge for the belt again. Zhang Weili got another shot at the title in 2022, but this time it was against Carla Esparza. This became the match that made Weili the strawweight champion again, and this match against Yan Xiaonan will be her second fight defending the title. Xiaonan is also a Chinese fighter with 17 wins and 3 losses. She won her first 6 matches in the UFC but has lost two of her last five, one of which was against former strawweight champion Carla Esparza.

  • Justin Gaethje #2 vs Max Holloway #1 (BMF Title Match)

Considering the fighting styles of these fighters, many MMA enthusiasts expect this to be a very entertaining match for the BMF belt. Justin "Highlight" Gaethje's last match was against star Dustin Poirier, who despite very good boxing and standing fighting, lost by knockout after a fantastic head kick executed by Justin Gaethje in the second round of the match. Max Holloway is an incredibly skilled boxer, and with fantastic footwork, he is always a joy to watch. Despite this, Holloway has had a tough time in featherweight, where perhaps the best ever in the weight class, Alexander Volkanovski, reigns. Despite being a lightweight bout the fight doesn't affect the rankings as it is a BMF match.

  • Charles Oliveira #1 vs Arman Tsarukyan #4 (Lightweight)

UFC President Dana White has openly stated that this match is crucial for determining who will challenge the reigning champion, Islam Makhachev, for the lightweight belt next. Arman Tsarukyan has won his last three matches, two of which ended in TKO, something that has helped the Armenian fighter build his name. During UFC 300, he faces one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners in the MMA world when he takes on Charles Oliveira in a lightweight match where the weight class's #1 ranking is at stake. Charles Oliveira won his last match against Beneil Dariush, and despite having beaten almost all ranked fighters in the division, he lost in his last title match against the division's champion, Islam Makhachev, something the Brazilian certainly looks forward to facing again.

  • Jiri Prochazka #2 vs Aleksandar Rakic #5 (Light Heavyweight)

This is a fight that many fans are eagerly anticipating, and not without reason. Before Jiri Prochazka lost to the current light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira, he was undefeated in 14 matches, three of which took place in the UFC. Prochazka reached the belt in June 2022 when he won the title match against Glover Teixeira, and after losing the title, he now strives to prove himself worthy of a rematch with Pereira. Aleksandar Rakic has only lost two of his eight matches since signing with the UFC in 2017. If Rakic were to win this match, it wouldn't be impossible for the Serbian fighter to challenge Alex Pereira for the belt in the near future.

  • Calvin Kattar #8 vs Aljamain Sterling #1 (Featherweight)

Former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling has moved up a weight class after losing the belt to "Suga" Sean O'Malley in August 2023. Sterling now faces Calvin Kattar, a fighter who has had a tough time lately, with only two wins in his last five matches.

  • Cody Brundage vs Bo Nickal (Middleweight)

The now highly hyped wrestler Bo Nickal made his UFC debut in March 2024 after being offered a contract via Dana White's Contender Series. Nickal is undefeated in MMA with five professional matches under his belt, and with dominant wins and phenomenal self-promotion, he has quickly become a big name with matches that attract many fans. Cody Brundage is more experienced than Nickal with 15 professional MMA matches. Brundage also has a wrestling background, which will make this match a very interesting test for Nickal.

  • Holly Holm #5 vs Kayla Harrison (Bantamweight)

Holly Holm is a veteran in the UFC and is best known for her shock win over legend Ronda Rousey in 2015. This win gave Holm the bantamweight belt, but it didn't last long as she lost to Miesha Tate in the match after the feat. Since then, she has had a tougher time in the division and lost two title matches to Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes. Holm is now 42 years old, and with the dream of reaching the belt again, this is a match she must win. Kayla Harrison has recently signed with the UFC and comes from the organization PFL, where she reached 16 wins out of 17 matches, a resume that caught the attention of the UFC and Dana White. As this is Harrison's first professional match in the UFC, she really has a lot to prove. This fight is very interesting as both women are under a lot of pressure but for entirely different reasons.

  • Sodiq Yussuf #13 vs Diego Lopes (Featherweight)

This featherweight match is very interesting as both fighters have the potential to be ranked in the near future. Sodiq Yussuf lost his last match against the experienced taekwondo master Edson Barboza. When the UFC signed Yussuf in 2018, the Nigerian managed to win five matches in a row before his first loss came against Arnold Allen in April 2021. Diego Lopes has won four of his last five matches, three of which are under the UFC umbrella, and is a fantastic Brazilian jiu-jitsu talent who has a lot to prove in the organization.

  • Jessica Andrade #4 vs Marina Rodriguez #6 (Strawweight)

Jessica Andrade's recent matches have been tough, and the Brazilian has only won two of her last five fights, and if she fails to win this one, her contract could be on the line, something that should motivate her to give the fans and the UFC a spectacular match. Marina Rodriguez won her last match but lost two before that, putting her in the same position as Andrade as she must perform in this fight.

  • Jim Miller vs Bobby Green #14 (Lightweight)

During the event, lightweight veteran Jim Miller will make history when he, with his match against Bobby Green, becomes the first fighter in the UFC to participate in his third anniversary gala. Miller faced Mac Danzig on the prelim card for UFC 100 in 2009 and Takanori Gomi on the UFC 200 card in 2016. The veteran won both of these matches, and many fans hope to see him win again on this card, in a match that may be the 40-year-old's last. The veteran's opponent, Bobby Green, became a phenomenon when he defeated Tony Ferguson in 2023. However, Green lost his last match against Jalin Turner on December 3, 2023.

  • Deiveson Figueiredo #8 vs Cody Garbrandt (Bantamweight)

In this match, two former champions in different weight classes meet. Cody Garbrandt won the bantamweight title after defeating Dominick Cruz in 2016. Before that, Cruz had completely dominated the division, holding onto the belt for six full years. After that, tougher times came for Garbrandt, and he lost the belt to TJ Dillashaw. However, the former bantamweight champion has won his last two matches and, like in 2016, is a favorite among supporters due to his aggressive and explosive fighting style. Deiveson Figueiredo has also reached the prestigious UFC belt, but in flyweight. Figueiredo won the belt in 2020 after a spectacular finish against Joseph Benavidez, and after defending the title in two matches, it was time to face Brendon Moreno. The first Moreno match ended in a draw, and as a result, there was a rematch. This rematch turned into two more, and after four matches, it was clear that Moreno was the flyweight champion, something that motivated Figueiredo to move up in weight and compete in bantamweight instead.
