When Does the NBA Season Start?
The 2026/27 NBA regular season tips off on October 20, 2026, with the season running through April 11, 2027. Our NBA picks will follow the action throughout the regular season, NBA Cup and into the postseason.

Our NBA Picks Record
Every settled NBA bet goes into our record with the line and odds we originally backed. Winners and losers stay there, making it possible to follow the results over the course of the season rather than judging them from the latest few games.
What I Look at Before Making an NBA Pick
The first thing I want to know is who’s playing and, almost as importantly, who isn’t. One missing starter can affect far more than the chances of his team winning.
If a high-usage guard sits, someone else has to handle the ball and take those shots. That can increase another player’s scoring opportunities, assists or minutes without necessarily changing his season averages very much. The same applies when a starting center is missing and rebounds suddenly become available elsewhere.
From there, I look at how the teams fit together. Pace matters, but so do the types of shots each offense creates, how the opponent defends them and where either side might have an advantage. Rebounding, three-point volume and defensive matchups can all become more important depending on the game.
The schedule is part of it too. An NBA team playing its fourth game in six nights isn’t necessarily an automatic fade, but I want to know about it. Back-to-backs, travel and recent minutes can be particularly relevant when key players have been carrying a heavy workload.
How We Bet the NBA
There’s rarely just one way to bet an NBA matchup. I might like the favorite but dislike the number, have no interest in the winner but like the total, or find that an injury has created a better opportunity in a player prop than in the game itself.
| NBA bet | What you’re betting on | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Point Spread | Winning margin with a handicap | Knicks -4.5 |
| Moneyline | Which team wins the game | Celtics to win |
| Over/Under | Combined points scored | Over 224.5 |
| Player Props | An individual player’s performance | Over 7.5 assists |
| Same Game Parlay | Multiple selections from one game | Knicks + Brunson points |
Why NBA Injury News Can Change Everything
Sometimes It’s Better to Wait
There are days when I have a good idea of what I want to bet several hours before the games start. There are others where the most important information hasn’t arrived yet.
If a player’s status could materially change the matchup, waiting can make more sense. There’s a trade-off. The attractive line you saw earlier might disappear once the news becomes official. But betting early also means accepting the risk that the information changes against you. For every published selection, our record uses the line and odds we had at the time we made the pick.
Compare the Sportsbook, Not Just the Odds
Shopping around for NBA bets isn’t only about finding -105 instead of -115. The actual line can be different too.
Our basketball betting sites guide compares the sportsbooks we use for NBA betting, including player props, Same Game Parlays, live markets and overall basketball coverage.
Dan Anderson
Senior Sports Betting AnalystThe key is working out which teammates actually benefit. One player might take more shots, another could handle the ball more often and someone else may simply see extra minutes.
Sportsbooks can adjust quickly, but not every market moves equally. Sometimes the better opportunity isn’t the new game line at all, but a player prop affected by the change.
