New York Knicks at Boston Celtics: Boston’s Frontcourt Flip Favors the Home Side
Boston's frontcourt upgrade gives it a useful matchup edge against the defending champions. The Celtics are worth backing on the short home spread.

Recommended pick
The Knicks retained most of their championship rotation, but Boston added a former New York center who directly addresses a major matchup concern. That frontcourt swing and the Celtics' early defensive cohesion make the short spread more attractive than the moneyline or total.
The frontcourt flip
Mitchell Robinson will spend Friday night battling the team he helped win a championship four months ago. That change matters beyond the revenge angle: Robinson gives Boston a rim-running center and offensive rebounder while removing the Knicks' best interior defensive option from last season's rotation.
New York replaced him with Andre Drummond, still a productive rebounder but a less mobile defender. Karl-Anthony Towns can pull Robinson away from the basket, which is the clearest concern for Boston, but the Celtics can surround their center with Jayson Tatum, Paul George and Derrick White. That is enough length and help defense to keep the matchup from becoming a simple five-out problem.
The Knicks' continuity deserves respect. Eleven of their top 12 players by minutes from last season returned, and Jalen Brunson remains the best late-game shot creator in this matchup. Boston, however, went 56-26 last season even though Tatum missed the first 62 games. Adding him back to a team that again finished in the top five at both ends gives the Celtics more upside than their offseason turnover initially suggests.
What the exhibitions showed
The preseason results are too lopsided to ignore completely, even if they should not be treated like regular-season evidence. Boston finished 4-0 and outscored its opponents by 75 points. New York went 1-4 and was outscored by 91.
There is important context. The Knicks' 50-point loss in Toronto came on the second night of a preseason back-to-back, and coach Mike Brown had little reason to chase results with a veteran championship roster. Boston's performances are more relevant as evidence that its new pieces can function together. In the two games when the main group was available, Joe Mazzulla started White, Jordan Walsh, Tatum, George and Robinson, immediately putting size and defense around his stars.
Boston entered Tuesday's opener with only two-way guard Devin Carter unavailable. Friday's injury report has not yet been filed, so the wager assumes both primary rotations make it through their season openers without a significant issue.
The offensive fit is not finished. George is more jumper-dependent than Jaylen Brown, and Boston may miss Brown's downhill pressure. Early in a season, though, defense and rebounding tend to translate more reliably than finely tuned half-court offense. Those are the areas where the new lineup already looks comfortable.
A short number at home
The Boston moneyline at -130 does not offer enough savings to justify passing on the spread. My projection is Celtics 115, Knicks 110, leaving room to lay one possession at a better price.
The 223.5 total is less appealing. Boston's revamped lineup could produce efficient offense, but both teams have enough wing defense to turn this into a slower half-court game. That uncertainty makes the side cleaner.
Boston -2.5 at -110 with Caesars is the selection. New York's championship core should keep the game competitive, but Robinson's move, Tatum's return to full availability and the Celtics' promising defensive start support a home win by more than a basket.
