How We Make Our NHL Picks and predictions
NHL betting has its own set of variables, and one piece of news can completely change the outlook for a game. A starting goalie confirmation, an injured first-line center or a team playing its third game in four nights can matter far more than the teams’ positions in the standings.
Goaltending is one of the first things we check. We look at who is expected to start, how that goalie has performed and whether the matchup changes if a backup gets the start. We then dig into how the teams are actually playing, including shot generation, scoring chances, special teams and whether recent results reflect their underlying performances.
For each NHL matchup, we consider factors including:
- Expected and confirmed starting goalies
- Forward lines and defensive pairings
- Injuries and lineup changes
- Shots and scoring chances
- Power-play and penalty-kill performance
- Home and road splits
- Rest, travel and back-to-back games
- Recent workload for the starting goalie
- Opening odds and market movement
The aim isn’t to predict every NHL game correctly. It’s to find situations where our view of the matchup differs enough from the available line to make the bet interesting. If we don’t see that, we don’t force a pick.
NHL Picks by Bet Type
Hockey gives us several ways to bet the same matchup. We may like a team to win without wanting to lay a heavy moneyline, or expect plenty of shots without having a strong opinion on the final score. Our picks can therefore come from different markets depending on where we see the best opportunity.
NHL Moneyline Picks
The moneyline is the simplest NHL bet: pick the team you think will win. There is no goal handicap to cover, so a one-goal win is enough.
That doesn’t mean we automatically back the team we think is more likely to win. A -200 favorite needs to win much more often to justify the price than a team available at -110. Our moneyline picks therefore come down to the relationship between each team’s chances of winning and the odds available.
NHL Puck Line Picks
The puck line is hockey’s version of the spread and is normally set at 1.5 goals. A favorite at -1.5 must win by two or more goals, while an underdog at +1.5 can win outright or lose by one goal and still cover.
The puck line is particularly interesting in hockey because teams trailing late often pull their goalie for an extra attacker. That creates more opportunities for both late tying goals and empty-net goals, which can turn a one-goal game into a two-goal final margin in seconds.
NHL Over/Under Picks
NHL totals are based on how many goals the two teams will combine to score. With a total of 6.5, seven or more goals wins the over and six or fewer wins the under.
Goaltending is obviously important, but it isn’t the only thing we look at. Shot volume, finishing, defensive play, power-play opportunities, penalty killing and the expected pace of the matchup can all affect our view of a total.
NHL Player Prop Picks
Player props allow us to focus on individual performances rather than who wins the game. Goals and points attract plenty of attention, but shots on goal can be particularly useful because they don’t require a player to actually score.
For skater props, we look at expected ice time, line mates, power-play role, recent shot volume and the type of shots an opponent tends to allow. A winger playing on the first power-play unit, for example, can present a very different betting opportunity from the same player after being moved further down the lineup.
Goalie props can also come into play, particularly saves. A goalie facing a team that generates a high number of shots may have an interesting saves line even if we don’t expect his team to win.
Where to Bet Our NHL Picks
Hockey markets can vary noticeably between sportsbooks. The difference isn’t always limited to the moneyline. One book might offer a skater at over 2.5 shots while another has already moved him to 3.5, and prices on puck lines, goalie saves and other props can differ as well.
