Comparing MLS Sportsbooks

For BetMGM, I particularly like how much you can see without even opening the full match menu. The important distinction is that there doesn’t need to be one “best” MLS sportsbook for every bettor. If I’m betting on an MLS Cup winner, I’ll compare the futures prices. If I’m betting on a Saturday night match, I’m more interested in who has the best 1X2 price. For a Same Game Parlay, the available legs and how the sportsbook prices correlated selections become more important.

Understanding MLS Moneyline Odds

If you normally bet on the NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL, the MLS moneyline can take a little getting used to. Instead of choosing between two teams, the standard market gives you three possible results: a home win, a draw or an away win.

You may also see this called 1X2 betting, where 1 is the home team, X is the draw and 2 is the away team. The bet is normally settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, so a regular-season match that finishes level stays a draw for betting purposes.

Imagine Inter Miami is playing New York City FC with these odds:

MLS Spread Betting

Spread betting in MLS works much like point spread betting in the NFL or NBA, except the handicap is measured in goals rather than points. However, spreads aren’t as central to MLS betting as they are in sports such as football and basketball.

In soccer, the 3-way moneyline (1X2), goal totals and Both Teams to Score (BTTS) tend to be more prominent markets, while spreads are another way to bet on the margin of victory.

For example, if LAFC is -1.5, they need to win by at least two goals for the bet to cash. A 3–1 win covers the spread, while a 2–1 win does not. If you instead take LAFC +1.5, your bet wins if LAFC wins, draws, or loses by exactly one goal.

Whole-goal spreads such as -1 or +1 can also result in a push. If you bet LAFC -1 and they win by exactly one goal, the spread finishes level and your stake is normally returned.

Good to now is that some US betting sites also offer Asian Handicaps, including quarter-goal lines such as -0.25 and +0.75. These are settled differently from standard goal spreads, so it’s important to check exactly which handicap market you’re betting.

MLS Cup Odds

MLS Cup odds are available throughout the season and cover all 30 teams, although the market works a little differently from futures such as the Super Bowl or NBA Championship. The reason is largely the MLS playoff format, where 18 teams qualify for the postseason and a team’s route to the final can be almost as important as how it performed during the regular season.

Nine teams qualify from each conference, with the eighth and ninth seeds meeting in a Wild Card game before the top seven enter in Round One. That opening round uses a best-of-three format, after which the playoffs switch to single-elimination games for the Conference Semifinals, Conference Finals and, eventually, MLS Cup.

This is something I pay quite a lot of attention to when looking at MLS Cup odds. A team sitting near the top of its conference may have a much more attractive route through the playoffs, particularly with home-field advantage, while a lower seed could face several difficult road games just to reach the final. At the same time, I wouldn’t automatically back the team with the best regular-season record simply because it sits at the top of the standings.

Instead, I like to look at where a team is likely to finish in its conference, how well it performs at home and on the road, whether key players are healthy and how the squad has changed during the season. Summer transfers can be especially important in MLS, since the team priced at +1500 midway through the year may look considerably stronger after adding a high-level Designated Player.

That’s also what makes MLS Cup futures interesting to follow throughout the season. A short-priced favorite at +500 isn’t automatically a better bet than a team at +1200 or +1500; the price has to make sense relative to that team’s chances of getting through its side of the playoff bracket.

MLS Cup vs. Supporters’ Shield

One thing that’s easy to confuse if you’re new to MLS betting is the difference between the MLS Cup and the Supporters’ Shield. The Supporters’ Shield goes to the club with the best regular-season record, whereas MLS Cup is decided through the postseason playoffs.

A team can therefore have the best record in MLS, win the Supporters’ Shield and still finish the season without MLS Cup. Conversely, a club doesn’t need to finish anywhere near first overall to qualify for the playoffs and eventually become champion.

When you’re comparing MLS futures, make sure you’re looking at the right market, as sportsbooks will often list MLS Cup Winner and Supporters’ Shield Winner separately.

Popular MLS Betting Markets

MLS betting sites offer far more than simply betting on which team will win. Alongside the standard three-way moneyline, you’ll normally find markets covering goals, handicaps, individual players and specific events within the match.

If you’re used to betting on American sports, the biggest difference is the draw. A regular-season MLS game can finish level, which affects everything from the standard moneyline to markets such as Draw No Bet and Double Chance.

MLS Player Props

MLS player props let you bet on what an individual player will do during a match rather than the final result. The selection varies by betting sites and fixture, but common soccer props include goals, shots, shots on target and assists, with larger MLS games generally attracting a wider range of markets.

MLS Same Game Parlays

MLS Same Game Parlays let you combine several selections from the same match into one bet, with every leg needing to win for the parlay to cash. Depending on the sportsbook and game, you may be able to combine the match result with goals, player props, Both Teams to Score, corners and other markets.

For example, an MLS Same Game Parlay could look like this:

Instead of placing three separate bets, the sportsbook combines them into one price. The potential payout is higher, but if Inter Miami wins 2–0 and Messi scores, the parlay still loses because Over 2.5 Goals didn’t hit.

Correlation Matters in MLS Parlays

This is where Same Game Parlays differ from ordinary parlays. Some outcomes within a soccer match are naturally connected, so sportsbooks can’t simply multiply the individual odds together.

Take Inter Miami to win + Over 2.5 goals + an Inter Miami forward to score. If that player scores, it increases the chance of Miami winning and also contributes directly toward the three goals needed for the Over. Those selections are positively correlated.

Modern sportsbooks can often price that correlation automatically through their Same Game Parlay product. As a result, the combined odds may be shorter than you’d get by simply multiplying the standalone prices.

MLS Live Betting

MLS live betting lets you place bets after kickoff, with odds adjusting throughout the match as the score, time remaining and game situation change. Common in-play markets include the 3-way moneyline, goal totals, spreads and next team to score.

Soccer is particularly interesting for live betting because a single goal can change the odds significantly. If a favorite falls 1–0 behind early, for example, you’ll usually get a much bigger price on that team than you did before kickoff, although there’s now less time available for it to come back and win.

I try not to look at the score alone. Chances created, red cards, substitutions and which team is controlling the game can all be important when deciding whether a live price is worth taking. A team trailing 1–0 while creating most of the chances presents a very different betting situation from one that’s being comfortably outplayed.
