Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning: A Short Turnaround Meets Tampa Bay’s Defensive Leak

Tampa Bay’s offense is rolling, but its recent trouble protecting leads makes the plus-money total more attractive than laying a goal and a half.

Tampa Bay’s recent games have opened up through transition mistakes and failed closeouts. Detroit’s short turnaround adds another path to seven goals without requiring either team to cover a steep side price.

Detroit’s short turnaround

Detroit has to play Florida on Monday night before traveling across the state for Tuesday’s game in Tampa. That is a difficult turnaround even before accounting for Dylan Larkin’s suspension and the disruption it has caused down the middle.

The Red Wings have not stopped scoring without Larkin. They put four past Chicago and another four past St. Louis, with Lucas Raymond and Emmitt Finnie supplying offense in the 5-4 loss to the Blues. The concern was at the other end: Detroit surrendered three goals in 4:38 after taking a 4-2 third-period lead.

That kind of breakdown becomes more likely on the second night of a back-to-back, particularly against Tampa Bay’s speed and skill through the top six. Fatigue tends to appear first in puck management, defensive-zone coverage and line changes — all dangerous areas against Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point and Jake Guentzel.

Tampa Bay’s open games

Tampa Bay’s defensive game has been loose enough to keep Detroit involved. The Lightning have allowed at least four goals in four consecutive games, and each of their past five contests has produced at least eight total goals.

The 5-4 shootout loss in Nashville exposed the current problem. Tampa Bay repeatedly gave up odd-man rushes, struggled with coverage and could not protect multiple leads. Similar issues surfaced two days earlier when Winnipeg scored three times in the third period of a 6-4 Lightning win.

Tampa Bay is 6-0 at home and has scored at least three goals in every game there. That supports the favorite, but the recent inability to close cleanly makes the -1.5 puck line less attractive at -115. A late Detroit goal could spoil that wager while helping the total.

The better price

The Lightning moneyline at -280 demands too much, while Detroit +1.5 asks the Red Wings to remain organized through a demanding schedule spot. The total gives us more ways to cash: Tampa Bay can control the game and win 5-2, or its transition defense can turn this into another 4-3 contest.

The strongest under argument is the possibility that Andrei Vasilevskiy suppresses a Detroit attack missing its top center. Goaltenders were not confirmed at publication, however, and Tampa Bay’s recent defensive issues have extended beyond save percentage. Too many quality chances are reaching the crease.

My projection is 4.2-3.0 Tampa Bay. Over 6.5 at +110 with Fanatics is the best combination of matchup support and price, with the uncertain goaltending assignments keeping the stake measured.
