Seattle Seahawks at Denver Broncos: Turnover Noise Hides Seattle’s Matchup Edge

Seattle’s loss looked worse than its down-to-down defense, while Denver’s win leaned on short fields. The secondary report tilts the matchup further.

Both clubs played turnover-heavy games in Week 5, but Seattle’s repeatable advantages on defense and at receiver look stronger than Denver’s reliance on short fields.

Denver’s secondary problem

Denver’s secondary is the first place this handicap shifted. Patrick Surtain II and Talanoa Hufanga were listed as nonparticipants on each of the Broncos’ first two estimated reports, while Riley Moss remained limited after missing Week 5 with a rib injury. Their final designations matter, but a Thursday turnaround leaves little recovery time.

That is a difficult setup against Jaxon Smith-Njigba, even with Seattle’s leading receiver limited by an ankle issue of his own. Smith-Njigba finished Sunday’s loss with 102 yards and a touchdown, bringing him to an NFL-leading 583 yards and seven scores through five games. His availability keeps Seattle’s biggest offensive advantage intact; the ankle and Denver’s pass rush keep the confidence level measured rather than aggressive.

What the Week 5 scores hid

Seattle’s 32-29 loss to San Francisco was much uglier on the scoreboard than it was defensively. The Seahawks held the 49ers to 269 yards and 4.8 yards per play. On the nine San Francisco possessions that did not follow a Seattle turnover, the 49ers scored only 11 points.

That continued a meaningful pattern: every Seattle opponent has finished below 5.0 yards per play. The Seahawks also enter Thursday ranked first in total defense, passing defense and takeaways. Denver, meanwhile, is averaging 19.4 points and 269 yards per game, ranking 26th and 30th in those categories.

The obvious danger is Seattle’s ball security. Eight of its nine turnovers have come in the past three games, including four against San Francisco. Denver just produced three takeaways and 13 points off them in a 23-17 win over the Chargers, with another touchdown following a fourth-down stop in Los Angeles territory. That gives the Broncos a credible upset route, but it also shows how dependent last week’s offense was on favorable field position.

Price and projection

The under at 40.5 deserves consideration, especially with two disruptive defenses, but Denver’s uncertain secondary and Seattle’s recent turnover volatility make the scoring distribution harder to trust. Short fields can ruin a low total quickly.

Seattle’s moneyline removes the margin requirement, but -145 is an expensive alternative when the spread remains below a field goal. My projection is Seattle 23, Denver 17: enough respect for Denver’s 15-1 run across its past 16 home games, but a clear enough separation to take Seattle -2.5 at -110 with BetMGM.
