Indianapolis Colts at Washington Commanders: Mariota’s Floor Makes Four Points Valuable in London
Washington has a credible fallback if Jayden Daniels cannot return, while Indianapolis’ defensive and turnover problems make this London spread look inflated.
NFL
Recommended pick
The quarterback situation creates obvious Washington risk, but Marcus Mariota has shown he can keep the offense functional. Indianapolis has not defended consistently enough or protected the football well enough to justify laying four on a neutral field.
Quarterback insurance
Sam Cosmi has already been ruled out, and Jayden Daniels remains limited by the left elbow injury that kept him out of Washington’s 33-31 win over Seattle. That would normally push me toward Indianapolis, especially with DeForest Buckner producing three sacks through three games and capable of attacking the replacement at right guard.
Marcus Mariota’s performance against Seattle changes the calculation. He completed 19 of 31 passes for 183 yards, threw three touchdowns without an interception and took only two sacks. Washington benefited from three takeaways and a defensive touchdown, so the 33-point total overstates what the offense generated. Still, Mariota got the ball out on schedule and avoided giving Seattle short fields.
That is enough quarterback insurance for an underdog getting more than a field goal. Daniels’ availability would raise Washington’s ceiling, but the spread does not require him to return for the bet to work.
Indianapolis has not created margin
Indianapolis’ 19-17 win over Houston was a necessary response after allowing 1,029 yards across its first two games, but it was not a clean turnaround. Daniel Jones committed three turnovers, the Colts failed to force one and four Spencer Shrader field goals rescued an offense that finished only one drive with a touchdown.
The Colts have faced a demanding opening schedule, including Baltimore and Kansas City, so their defensive ranking needs some context. Even so, allowing 417.3 yards per game is difficult to square with laying four points. Their 29th-ranked run defense is especially relevant against a Washington offense averaging 132 rushing yards and ranking eighth in that category.
Washington can lean on the ground game, reduce the burden on either quarterback and create a possession-driven script. The Commanders’ own pass defense ranks 31st, which gives Jones and Josh Downs a clear path to production, but Jones’ ball-security issues make sustained separation less likely than the Colts’ offensive matchup initially suggests.
| Metric | Indianapolis | Washington |
|---|---|---|
| Points per game | 24.0 | 25.0 |
| Total defense | 417.3 yards per game | 362.3 yards per game |
| Rushing defense | 141.3 yards per game | 82.0 yards per game |
| Turnover differential | -5 | +2 |
Four is the useful number
The over deserves consideration because both defenses have allowed more than 30 points per game. At 47.5, however, it asks Washington to score efficiently despite Cosmi’s absence and an unsettled quarterback situation. Indianapolis’ improvement against Houston also creates enough uncertainty to pass on the total.
The moneyline offers a bigger payoff, but Washington’s defensive issues make the points more valuable than betting on an outright win. I project Indianapolis to win 25-23, a result that lands comfortably inside this number.
Washington +4 at -112 with BetMGM is preferable to the available +3.5 because the extra half-point costs only seven cents and protects against a common one-score margin.
