Carolina Panthers at Green Bay Packers: Center and Tackle Losses Lower the Scoring Ceiling
Carolina’s tackle loss and Green Bay’s center attrition make both offenses harder to trust on a short week. The deciding question is whether the Packers can exploit Carolina’s run defense.
NFL
Recommended pick
Carolina’s rushing collapse points toward Green Bay, but the Packers’ last-ranked ground game and both teams’ protection issues make the total more attractive than the spread or moneyline.
Protection changes the matchup
Carolina’s offensive line took another major hit Sunday when right tackle Taylor Moton suffered an ankle injury that requires surgery. The Panthers then allowed five sacks, committed three offensive turnovers and lost 43-13 to Tampa Bay. Starting guard Damien Lewis also remained a projected non-participant on Tuesday’s short-week injury report.
Green Bay has its own emergency up front. Starting center Sean Rhyan and backup Jacob Monk both exited the Packers’ 20-17 loss at Detroit, forcing John Williams to make his NFL debut at center. Rhyan remained out of practice through Tuesday, while Monk was placed on injured reserve.
Those absences matter more to the total than to either side. Carolina’s protection was already unstable before losing Moton, and Green Bay’s interior uncertainty comes at a bad time for an offense struggling to finish drives.
A weakness Green Bay may not exploit
The obvious argument against an under is Carolina’s run defense. Tampa Bay ran 49 times for 258 yards Sunday, the second time this season the Panthers have surrendered more than 250 rushing yards. Green Bay should test that weakness, especially with Josh Jacobs back.
The problem is that no offense has been less equipped to exploit it. The Packers average 59.9 rushing yards per game and 2.9 per carry. Jacobs managed 36 yards on 11 attempts in his season debut, and the offense entered this matchup averaging 20.6 points with a 46.2% red-zone touchdown rate. Losing the top two centers does not make a sudden rushing turnaround easier.
That conflict is the center of the bet. Carolina’s defense can be run on, but Green Bay has repeatedly needed Jordan Love to compensate for an ineffective ground game. Even favorable field position against Detroit produced empty trips and missed opportunities.
Room at a valuable number
Carolina’s 26.5-point scoring average and explosive passing ability are enough to keep me away from Packers -3.5 or -4. The Panthers also offer little appeal on the moneyline after Moton’s injury, particularly against a Green Bay defense allowing 20.7 points per game.
Under 48 provides a cleaner path. Green Bay can pressure Bryce Young’s reshuffled line without selling out, while Carolina’s defensive problems are concentrated in an area the Packers have not consistently attacked. Both teams are also installing adjustments on a four-day turnaround.
My projection is Green Bay 24, Carolina 20. The extra half-point at BetRivers is worth the five-cent increase over Under 47.5, since a 27-21 finish would push rather than lose. Under 48 at -113 is the play.
