Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers: Quarterback Uncertainty Shapes a Controlled Opener

Atlanta’s quarterback change and Pittsburgh’s right-tackle uncertainty create reasons to expect a cautious opener. Getting the total at 42 provides valuable protection.

Both teams have reasons to simplify: Atlanta is installing a new offense around Tua Tagovailoa, while Pittsburgh can lean on defense and ball security instead of chasing a shootout.

Atlanta’s late quarterback call

Atlanta waited until Monday to name Tua Tagovailoa its Week 1 starter, with Michael Penix Jr. set to be inactive despite returning as a full practice participant Wednesday. That is not an ideal runway for the Falcons’ first regular-season game under Kevin Stefanski and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.

The offense has also shifted toward more snaps from under center, changing the timing and footwork for a line that is introducing a new starter on the right side. Those adjustments now have to hold up against T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig and Jack Sawyer. Pittsburgh has indicated it wants to rotate that group rather than wear down Watt, allowing the Steelers to maintain pressure options into the fourth quarter.

Tagovailoa’s quick release and Bijan Robinson’s versatility offer answers, so this is not a forecast for Atlanta to disappear offensively. The concern is whether the Falcons can sustain touchdown drives without negative plays or protection breakdowns.

Pittsburgh can stay patient

Pittsburgh has more stability at quarterback than the coaching change initially suggests. Aaron Rodgers is in his second Steelers season, and his long history with Mike McCarthy gives him command of the terminology and passing concepts. Rodgers also threw 24 touchdowns against seven interceptions in 2025, the kind of ball security that limits short fields and cheap points.

There are still reasons to keep Pittsburgh’s scoring projection modest. Rodgers did not take a preseason snap, and the Steelers have not settled publicly on Dylan Cook or first-round rookie Max Iheanachor at right tackle. Iheanachor missed much of the preseason before returning for the finale, making protection on that side a genuine Week 1 question.

Atlanta’s biggest defensive issue works against an under: Jalon Walker is out for the season, and James Pearce Jr. is serving a suspension after the two combined for 16 sacks last year. If the replacements cannot hurry Rodgers, Pittsburgh’s receiving group can punish them. Even so, the cleaner plan for the Steelers is likely to feature Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle against a defense that allowed 4.6 yards per carry in 2025. That approach can produce a lead without producing a fast game.

The value of 42

The Steelers moneyline is defensible, but -178 offers little room for Week 1 uncertainty. Laying -3.5 is also uncomfortable in a matchup where Pittsburgh can control play and still win by a field goal. Atlanta +3.5 has some value in that script, although the Falcons’ quarterback and protection questions make them difficult to trust.

The total handles those competing possibilities better. Caesars is offering Under 42 at -108, which is preferable to taking Under 41.5 for only three cents less. That half-point preserves a push on several plausible outcomes and matters in a game with two experienced kickers and reasons for both offenses to operate carefully.

My projection is Pittsburgh 23, Atlanta 17. The recommendation is Under 42 at -108 with Caesars.
