Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks: Healthy Sixers Can Keep Banner Night Tight

Philadelphia’s healthy starting five offers enough creation to keep this close, even with real concerns about its bench and opening-night chemistry.

Our pick Philadelphia 76ers +4.5 Spread / -105 / 2.0 units

New York owns the continuity, depth and home-court advantages, but Philadelphia’s five projected starters are available and the points protect against its legitimate early chemistry concerns.

The availability gap

Philadelphia’s projected starting five reached opening night without an injury designation, but its reserve group did not. Anfernee Simons, Dean Wade and Adem Bona are questionable, while Dominick Barlow, Ariel Hukporti and Tacko Fall are out. New York, meanwhile, has nobody listed on the official injury report.

That contrast favors the Knicks when the benches enter, particularly behind Joel Embiid. It does not erase the importance of Philadelphia having Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown and LeBron James available together. Embiid scored 27 points in the preseason finale, and the entire starting group made it through camp without a significant injury. When four and a half points are attached to that level of top-end talent, the Sixers’ health matters more than their uneven exhibition results.

Continuity versus creation

New York’s strongest argument is familiarity. The Knicks retained the core of a 53-win championship team, and their offense improved from 118.7 points per 100 possessions during the regular season to 119.9 in the playoffs. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart already understand their roles in high-leverage possessions.

Philadelphia’s five starters shared the floor in only one preseason game, and the coaching staff openly acknowledged that the timing remains rough. That is enough to keep me off the Sixers moneyline, especially on banner night at Madison Square Garden.

The spread is a different calculation. James gives Philadelphia another organizer, Maxey and Edgecombe supply speed, Brown can pressure the rim, and Embiid remains the half-court release valve. Even if the offense lacks polish, there are too many capable creators for the Sixers to depend on one matchup or one ballhandler. That should help Philadelphia avoid the extended empty stretches that turn competitive road games into comfortable home wins.

A close finish is priced well

The depleted bench is the reason to keep the stake measured. If Bona cannot play, the non-Embiid minutes could become a problem against Towns and Andre Drummond. Losing Wade or Simons would also reduce Nick Nurse’s flexibility when he begins staggering his stars.

Still, New York’s depth advantage has to create more than a one- or two-possession margin to beat this number. My projection has the Knicks winning 117-115, which leaves no worthwhile edge on the total and makes Philadelphia’s moneyline unnecessarily aggressive.

The preferred bet is Philadelphia 76ers +4.5 at -105 with FanDuel.
