Milwaukee Bucks at Washington Wizards: New offenses may need time to settle

Washington’s lineup uncertainty and Milwaukee’s uneven offensive transition make the elevated opener total the cleaner angle than either side.

The spread depends heavily on AJ Dybantsa’s availability, while Milwaukee’s new offensive hierarchy remains difficult to price. The total leaves more room to account for early-season friction.

Dybantsa clouds the rotation

AJ Dybantsa’s left ankle sprain has complicated Washington’s preparation at the worst possible time. The rookie scored 12 points in 15 minutes before leaving Friday’s preseason finale, then remained day-to-day after doing some shooting work at Monday’s practice.

His status matters beyond the obvious loss of an athletic starting wing. Washington is already trying to organize a new offense around Trae Young and Anthony Davis while fitting Dybantsa alongside Alex Sarr and Kyshawn George. Taking one of those pieces out — or playing him at less than full strength — adds another rotation adjustment before the group has played a meaningful game together.

That makes Washington -5.5 difficult to lay. The Wizards scored 106 points and committed 23 turnovers against New Orleans in their final tune-up. The giveaways could produce transition chances for Milwaukee, but they also showed how uneven Washington’s execution remains when forced to work through new combinations.

The Bucks are still reorganizing

Milwaukee brings its own uncertainty after trading Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis and handing the offense to a group led by Tyler Herro. Taylor Jenkins has shooting and depth available, but replacing Antetokounmpo’s rim pressure is a structural change, not a simple redistribution of shot attempts.

The Bucks’ 128-127 overtime win over Indiana offered encouragement without providing a clean endorsement. Herro scored 25 points and made five of seven 3-pointers, while Myles Turner collected 13 rebounds and blocked three shots. Milwaukee still trailed 71-56 at halftime with its primary players involved. The teams were tied at 117 after regulation, keeping the four-quarter total at 234.

Milwaukee +5.5 has more appeal than its +170 moneyline because Washington’s offense may not create separation. Still, the Bucks’ poor first half against Indiana makes it hard to build the entire bet around them staying close.

The total leaves room

The total is the cleaner way to handle two rosters undergoing substantial change. Washington’s final preseason game produced 213 points, and Milwaukee’s finale stayed below this number in regulation. Across the supplied preseason results, six of the teams’ nine games finished below 238.5.

There is a real argument for the other side. Washington allowed 131 points to Brooklyn, Milwaukee gave up 125 to Chicago, and turnovers can turn a slow half-court game into easy points. Young and Herro also give both teams guards capable of accelerating the scoring quickly.

Even so, a total of 238.5 asks these new rotations to find efficient offense immediately. Washington can lean on the Davis-Sarr pairing to protect the paint, while Milwaukee has Turner and Kel’el Ware available inside. My projection falls in the 232-to-235 range, leaving enough separation to play Under 238.5 at -110 with BetMGM.
