Seattle Sounders FC vs Sporting Kansas City: Sporting KC’s clean sheet came with warning signs

A misleading shutout

Sporting Kansas City finally recorded its first shutout of 2026 on Saturday, but the 2-0 score at Houston flatters the defensive performance. The Dynamo finished with 22 shots and 2.7 expected goals, while Stefan Cleveland made five saves and got help from the post. Houston also played the entire second half with 10 men after Héctor Herrera’s stoppage-time red card.

That is not enough to erase a season of poor prevention. Sporting has conceded 63 goals, third-most in MLS, and allowed at least three in three of its last five matches. Its past eight trips to Seattle, Portland and Vancouver have produced no points and a 24-4 aggregate deficit. The roster has changed over that span, but the recurring difficulty defending away from home in the Pacific Northwest fits the wider season numbers.

Production without Joveljić

Seattle has scored nine goals across its last four matches and won its past two at Lumen Field by two-goal margins. Those victories are especially relevant because both came without Dejan Joveljić, who will miss a third straight match while representing Serbia.

Albert Rusnák has taken control of the attack with one goal and four assists in three games. Paul Arriola supplied both assists in the 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake before scoring against Minnesota, while Jordan Morris and Danny Musovski have also contributed. Seattle is no longer depending on one central striker to finish every move.

Hassani Dotson’s suspension is the main concern, particularly with Snyder Brunell also on international duty. Seattle’s defensive options are improving, however. Jackson Ragen started against Minnesota and Yeimar returned from his long injury absence as a substitute. That depth gives Brian Schmetzer more ways to protect a lead than he had earlier in the season.

The plus-money route

Seattle’s moneyline points in the right direction, but -200 is too expensive for a team that has still scored the third-fewest goals in MLS. The total is less appealing because Sporting’s new-look attack has produced 11 goals in four matches, creating legitimate arguments on both sides of 3.5.

The spread offers the better price and a cleaner read on the game script. Sporting can threaten through André Luiz, yet its Houston result showed how many chances it still permits even when the scoreboard stays clean. If Seattle establishes territorial control, Sporting’s back line is unlikely to survive another high-volume night.

My projection is Seattle 3-1, with a 52% chance that the Sounders win by multiple goals. The +116 price carries a break-even rate of about 46.3%, leaving enough room for the absences and Sporting’s improved attack. Seattle Sounders FC -1.5 at +116 with FanDuel is the play.
