Orlando City SC vs D.C. United: Orlando’s Defensive Leaks Keep Four Goals in Play

Orlando’s attack is rolling, but the Columbus win exposed how much pressure its defense is allowing. A short turnaround favors another high-event game.

Our pick Over +3.5 Total / -103 / 2.0 units

Orlando has the attacking form to drive the score, but its recent defensive numbers make a comfortable home win less appealing than backing another open game.

The Columbus warning

Orlando City’s 3-2 win over Columbus came with a warning that matters more than the result. Maxime Crépeau had to make a club-record 12 saves, and Iván Angulo’s 89th-minute winner arrived against the run of play. That is not the profile I want behind Orlando -1.5, even at a tempting plus price.

It does point toward goals. The Lions have scored 11 and conceded 12 across their five listed matches, with three of their last four MLS games producing at least five goals. Their attack has enough variety to keep that pace going: Antoine Griezmann entered Wednesday with 14 goal contributions in 12 MLS appearances and a contribution in eight straight league matches, while Angulo had scored in five consecutive MLS games.

D.C. just allowed four at Miami, so Orlando should get enough chances to do most of the work on this total.

Three days to reset

The schedule makes an Orlando moneyline less comfortable without lowering the scoring outlook. Both clubs play Wednesday night before meeting Saturday. Orlando must return from Toronto, while D.C. travels south after hosting Red Bull New York, leaving each side only three days between matches.

That turnaround matters for an Orlando defense already being adjusted. Robin Jansson missed Wednesday’s lineup because of a late training knock, Griffin Dorsey was questionable and Tyrese Spicer remained out. Their availability could improve by Saturday, but the Lions still have limited preparation time to address the chances Columbus created.

Orlando should regain Marco Pašalić after his one-game suspension Wednesday. That gives the home side another rested attacking option alongside Griezmann, Angulo and Martín Ojeda, strengthening the case for Orlando to push the score rather than control the game defensively.

One D.C. goal may be enough

D.C.’s attack is the obvious concern. United produced only two shots on target in the 4-0 loss at Miami, and Wednesday’s league status report listed Louis Munteanu, Hosei Kijima and Gabriel Segal out. If those absences carry into Saturday, Orlando may need to score three or four itself.

That possibility is credible at Inter&Co Stadium, where the Lions scored three against both Toronto and Columbus in their last two home matches. D.C. also scored three at Vancouver recently and beat Orlando 3-2 in April, so one away goal is a reasonable projection even if United’s available lineup is not at full strength.

Four of the past five meetings have reached at least four goals, though current form matters more than that secondary trend. My projection is approximately 4.1 total goals, with 3-1 and 3-2 the likeliest paths. Over 3.5 goals at -103 with BetRivers is the better bet than laying a margin with Orlando.
