New York Red Bulls vs Atlanta United FC: Atlanta’s Front Three Makes the Favorite Vulnerable

Atlanta has found sharper combinations through Almirón, Miranchuk and Embolo, while New York has conceded three in consecutive losses. The underdog price is too large to ignore.

Our pick Atlanta United FC Moneyline / +250 / 1.0 units

Atlanta’s attack has recently created chances at a level its season record obscures, and New York’s elimination plus defensive slippage weakens the case for the home favorite.

Atlanta’s attack is finding answers

Miguel Almirón and Alexey Miranchuk drove Atlanta’s best attacking performance of the fall in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Toronto. They combined through central areas for the opener, Almirón created Cooper Sanchez’s goal, and Miranchuk finished the rebound from another Almirón shot. Atlanta put eight attempts on target and could have added a fourth through Breel Embolo.

That was not an isolated productive afternoon. Atlanta generated 1.1 expected goals to New York City FC’s 0.3 before halftime in its previous road game, only to lose 2-1 on two long-range goals, including the winner in the 95th minute. Two weeks earlier, Atlanta led Montréal 1.81 to 0.06 in first-half xG during a 3-0 road win.

The results remain uneven, but the Almirón-Miranchuk-Embolo group is producing cleaner chances than Atlanta’s season record suggests. That gives the visitor more upset potential than its price reflects.

The favorite has lost control

New York has allowed three goals in consecutive matches. The Red Bulls erased a two-goal deficit at New England before losing 3-2, then suffered another 3-2 defeat at Nashville after conceding two own goals and a stoppage-time header from a corner.

There is an obvious warning for an Atlanta back line that has conceded nine times in five games: New York scored twice in both defeats, and Julian Hall, Cade Cowell and Adri Mehmeti have supplied plenty of energy around the box. The Red Bulls also beat Inter Miami 2-0 in their latest home appearance, so dismissing their home-field advantage would be careless.

Still, New York’s moneyline requires trusting a team with one win in five at a near-even price. Both clubs are eliminated, and New York has not shown enough control to merit that confidence. Atlanta also won the August meeting 2-1, a secondary but relevant sign that it can handle this matchup.

The underdog price is the difference

Over 3.5 is tempting after those two New York shootouts, but only five of the teams’ combined last 10 matches cleared that number. Atlanta United +1.5 offers protection, yet the -310 price leaves little room for error. The road moneyline is the cleaner value play.

Atlanta’s +250 price carries a 28.6% break-even probability. My projection puts its win chance closer to 32%, with the attacking improvement and New York’s recent defensive problems outweighing the venue disadvantage. Mauricio Amaro leaving the Toronto match injured adds uncertainty, as does Atlanta’s own poor defensive record, so this belongs in the modest-stake range.

Atlanta United FC moneyline at +250 with Fanatics is the selection.
