FC Cincinnati vs D.C. United: Cincinnati’s Shot Volume Outweighs the Shutout

Cincinnati’s 24-shot shutout loss should not hide the pressure it created. D.C.’s road defending gives that pressure room to become a high-event game.

Cincinnati’s 24-shot shutout and D.C.’s four-goal concessions in its last two road games create a stronger case in the total than in the side prices.

The shutout was misleading

FC Cincinnati produced 24 shots, put eight on target and controlled 66% of possession against Columbus on Sunday. It still lost 2-0 because the Crew scored with both of their shots on goal.

That result reflects Cincinnati’s season-long problems in both penalty areas, but it would be a mistake to read the shutout as evidence of an attack that has stopped creating. The Orange and Blue scored eight times across their previous four matches, and they should again spend long stretches attacking at TQL Stadium against a D.C. United side that has struggled to manage road pressure.

D.C. gave up four goals at Orlando on Saturday after conceding four at Inter Miami in its previous away game. Orlando generated seven shots on target, while D.C. allowed both of the game’s opening goals inside 22 minutes. Another early concession would force the visitors to open up against a Cincinnati team that needs three points in the playoff race.

Both boxes remain vulnerable

The other half of this wager is Cincinnati’s inability to make control feel secure. It has conceded 11 goals over its last five matches, including five across consecutive home defeats to New England and Columbus.

Those goals have not required opponents to dominate. New England punished crosses and a set piece, while Columbus scored from a corner and a counterattack despite creating little else. Miles Robinson remains out, and newly signed midfielder José Martínez is also unavailable, leaving Cincinnati without two players who could help stabilize those defensive moments.

D.C. has enough of a focal point to take advantage. Tai Baribo scored his 16th league goal of the season at Orlando and attempted seven shots. Louis Munteanu’s absence reduces the supporting threat, and captain Lucas Bartlett is eligible to return after serving his suspension, which are the clearest arguments against a high total. Neither fully solves the matchup, though. Bartlett returns to a defense that has just been opened up twice away from home, while Baribo gives D.C. a direct route to contributing rather than merely absorbing pressure.

The total offers the better price

FC Cincinnati’s moneyline at -136 requires trusting a team that has lost consecutive home matches and won only once in its last five. The +370 price on Cincinnati -2.5 asks even more from a side that just wasted 24 shots. At the other extreme, D.C. United +2.5 at -650 offers no usable return.

Over +3.5 at -106 with BetRivers is the cleaner way to play the matchup. It needs four goals rather than a specific winner, and the price is close enough to even money to justify that threshold. The realistic danger is another poor Cincinnati finishing night, particularly if D.C. sits deep with Bartlett restored. My projection is a 3-2 Cincinnati win, with the home side’s pressure producing chances at both ends once the game stretches.
