D.C. United vs FC Cincinnati: D.C.’s urgency raises the rematch ceiling
D.C. United cannot afford another passive second half, and FC Cincinnati has the creators to punish the extra space. The four-goal threshold is playable near even money.

Recommended pick
Wednesday’s 2-1 score obscured a busy game with chances at both ends. The move to Audi Field and D.C.’s need for three points should create more transition opportunities for Cincinnati’s strongest attackers.
What Wednesday showed
Three nights after Teenage Hadebe converted Evander’s free kick to give FC Cincinnati a 2-1 win, these teams meet again with almost no recovery or tactical preparation time. That quick turnaround matters because Wednesday’s game was more active than the final score suggests.
The teams combined for 27 shots, 10 attempts on target and 15 corners. D.C. also had an effort cleared off the goal line before Kimito Nono’s equalizer. Cincinnati deserves credit for protecting its second-half lead, limiting Tai Baribo and blocking four of D.C.’s six shots after halftime, but that is a difficult formula to repeat on the road with tired legs.
The venue and standings should change D.C.’s approach. United is now six points behind Cincinnati and cannot treat a home draw as a particularly useful result. More numbers committed forward would give Baribo better support, but it would also leave Evander and Kévin Denkey with the transition space Cincinnati did not consistently receive Wednesday.
The defensive tradeoff
D.C.’s absences keep this from becoming a larger wager. Louis Munteanu remains out, removing the most natural second scoring threat alongside Baribo, while Hosei Kijima and Gabe Segal are also unavailable. Baribo managed only one off-target attempt Wednesday as Cincinnati’s makeshift back three crowded his runs.
Cincinnati’s defensive condition is still the more persuasive part of the total. Julián Malatini is expected to remain sidelined after suffering a leg injury against Columbus, leaving Hadebe, Nick Hagglund and Kyle Smith to handle another match on short rest. That group defended the box well Wednesday, but D.C. generated nine corners and enough territorial pressure to keep it working.
Cincinnati has now scored 62 goals and conceded 71 through 30 league matches. Even when its finishing has fluctuated, Evander’s delivery and Denkey’s movement give it multiple routes to goal against a D.C. side that has conceded at least twice in three of its last four MLS games.
Price and projection
The strongest objection is obvious: Wednesday stopped at three goals, and D.C. is missing an important attacker. That makes Over 3.5 more volatile than a standard three-goal total.
Still, neither moneyline offers a cleaner position. Cincinnati’s road record makes its plus price difficult to trust, while D.C.’s recent defensive form does not justify backing the home side. The spread options either demand an unlikely multi-goal D.C. win or attach an extreme price to Cincinnati.
My projection is 2-2, with a 3-1 result in either direction also realistic if D.C.’s playoff urgency stretches the game. Over 3.5 at -108 with BetRivers is the best available wager.
