Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees: Tuesday’s quiet bats have pushed this total too low
Tuesday’s doubleheader produced only nine runs across two games, but recent starter form leaves more scoring paths than the new total implies.
MLB
Recommended pick
A low-scoring doubleheader, Aaron Judge’s absence and wind blowing in explain the tiny number. Recent starter performance still leaves several paths to seven runs.
Tuesday changed the number
New York got only three runs and eight hits out of Tuesday’s 18 innings, while Aaron Judge remained sidelined with a calf strain. Tampa Bay was blanked in the opener, then did most of its damage late in a 6-1 nightcap win. That two-game snapshot is the obvious reason a total of 6.5 is available Wednesday.
It is also an aggressive adjustment. The opener was driven by Carlos Rodón’s eight scoreless innings, and Drew Rasmussen struck out 11 while allowing one run over 6 2/3 in Game 2. Neither of Wednesday’s starters has matched that level of run prevention lately.
The starters leave openings
Seymour’s strikeout production deserves respect. He has 155 punchouts in 127 1/3 innings, and he fanned 10 over six innings against Houston two starts ago. The problem is that the left-hander followed it by allowing four earned runs and seven hits in five innings against Boston. His last three appearances have produced nine earned runs in 14 innings.
Cole steadied himself in Arizona, working six innings of two-run ball with no walks. Even that rebound included another home run, however, after he had surrendered seven homers across his previous two starts. His command remains strong, but hitters have done enough damage when he misses to make a low total uncomfortable.
| Measure | Gerrit Cole | Ian Seymour |
|---|---|---|
| Season ERA | 3.63 | 4.38 |
| ERA over last seven games | 4.20 | 5.11 |
| Last three starts | 17 1/3 IP, 11 ER | 14 IP, 9 ER |
A low bar for both offenses
Under backers have legitimate support. Judge is unavailable, Tuesday’s deep starts spared both bullpens from an extreme workload, and the forecast calls for a stiff wind blowing in from left-center. This does not shape up as a classic Yankee Stadium power night.
The number does not require one. A 4-3 game is enough, and the recent pitching suggests that each offense can contribute without needing a home-run barrage. Seymour has been vulnerable enough for New York to score three or four, while Tampa Bay’s best hitters can punish the occasional elevated fastball that has troubled Cole.
The side markets are less attractive. Cole’s matchup advantage makes Tampa Bay’s plus-price moneyline difficult to embrace, but laying -138 with a Yankees lineup missing Judge offers little room for error. The run lines either demand a margin or carry an excessive price. The total isolates the shared starter volatility more cleanly.
The recommendation
My projection lands at 7.3 runs, centered more on a competitive 4-3 or 5-3 game than an offensive explosion. Over 6.5 at -106 with Caesars is the wager.
