Boston’s unresolved pitching choice does not weaken the scoring angle because both Payton Tolle and Sonny Gray have controlled the Yankees. The side and run-line prices require more offensive certainty than either club currently offers.

Schlittler sets the shape

Aaron Boone has handed Game 1 to Cam Schlittler while planning as if Aaron Judge will not be on New York’s Wild Card roster. Those two developments pull this opener in the same direction: toward a game decided by pitching rather than the rivalry’s reputation for fireworks.

Schlittler finished 14-6 with a 1.95 ERA, but his work against Boston is even more relevant. Counting last year’s postseason, he owns a 0.55 ERA with 39 strikeouts over 32 1/3 innings in five starts against the Red Sox. That is enough history to show Boston has not solved his ability to generate empty swings.

The Red Sox also enter after scoring nine total runs across their final five regular-season games. Willson Contreras and Ceddanne Rafaela have returned, but both have recently dealt with physical issues and limited playing time. This is a difficult spot to expect Boston’s lineup to immediately find its sharpest version.

Either Boston option works

Boston has not announced whether Payton Tolle or Sonny Gray will start. Normally that uncertainty would be a reason to wait on a total this low, but both choices support the same basic argument.

Tolle has overwhelmed New York twice, and his left-handed look would be especially useful against a Yankees lineup missing Judge. Gray provides a different route with command, experience and a 2.72 season ERA. Neither pitcher requires Boston to win a high-scoring game.

The clear concern is that New York scored 24 runs in its last five games, including nine against Tampa Bay. A 6.5 total offers very little forgiveness if the Yankees run into a couple of early pitches. Still, removing Judge also removes their most dependable answer to quality pitching and changes how aggressively Boston can navigate the rest of the order.

The total offers the cleaner price

The Yankees moneyline at -148 benefits from Schlittler’s matchup edge, but it asks their diminished lineup to separate from another strong starter. The -1.5 run line at +158 is more attractive on price, yet it conflicts with the tight game script. Boston +1.5 at -177 charges too much for that same possibility.

There is bullpen risk for the total. Boston lost Tyron Guerrero to a shoulder strain, reducing its late-inning depth, although Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman remain available for the most important outs. New York can counter with David Bednar after Schlittler.

My projection is a 3-2 Yankees win, with 4-2 still inside the number. At even money, Under 6.5 at BetMGM is the best way to back the starting-pitching advantage without asking either offense to deliver a specific result.
