Is Underdog Really a Sportsbook?
Underdog looks a lot like a sportsbook when you first open Prediction Picks, but technically, it isn’t one. You can back teams to win, pick spreads and totals, and make predictions on futures much like you would at FanDuel or DraftKings, although the transaction happening underneath is fundamentally different.
Instead of placing a wager against Underdog at traditional American odds, you’re buying event contracts through a regulated prediction market. Those contracts are priced between $0 and $1 based on the market’s implied probability, and a winning contract settles at $1. So while the mechanics are different, the experience is deliberately familiar if you’ve bet on sports before.
That distinction is also what makes Underdog particularly interesting in the US market. Prediction Picks are available in states such as California and Texas, where conventional online sportsbooks still can’t operate, which gives millions of sports fans access to markets that look a lot like sports betting without Underdog actually running a sportsbook.
There are trade-offs. FanDuel and DraftKings offer considerably more depth, particularly once you get beyond the major game markets, while contract pricing and exchange fees take a little getting used to if you’ve spent years thinking in +150 and -110.
Still, Underdog has done a good job of hiding most of that complexity behind an app that feels much simpler than the infrastructure running underneath it.
Underdog Welcome Offer & Promo Code
Underdog’s welcome offer isn’t quite as straightforward as the promos you’ll find at most sportsbooks, since the offer you see can depend on your location and which Underdog products are available there.
The main offer currently advertised by Underdog is a first-deposit match worth up to $1,000 in Bonus Cash with promo code UDPROMO. Underdog also advertises a separate Play $5, Get $50 in Bonus Entries offer for new customers using the same code, so it’s worth checking the promotion shown in your account before depositing.
| Offer | Up to $1,000 in Bonus Cash |
|---|---|
| Promo Code | UDPROMO |
| Trigger | First deposit |
| Maximum Bonus | $1,000 |
| Bonus Type | Bonus Cash |
| Alternative Offer | Play $5, Get $50 in Bonus Entries |
| Availability | Varies by location and account |
The deposit match is the more valuable offer on paper, particularly if you’re planning to deposit more than the minimum, although Bonus Cash isn’t the same as withdrawable cash. It needs to be played through before it becomes eligible for withdrawal.
The $50 offer works differently, since the reward comes as Bonus Entries rather than a deposit match. Which promotion you see can vary, and because Underdog operates several products under the same account, you should check the offer displayed during registration rather than assuming every user gets the same promotion.
How to Claim the Underdog Promo
- Go to Underdog and create a new account.
- Enter promo code UDPROMO during registration.
- Check which new-user promotion is available to you.
- Make your first deposit and complete the qualifying requirements shown with the offer.
- Any eligible Bonus Cash or Bonus Entries will be credited according to the terms of your promotion.

Underdog Sports & Prediction Markets
Underdog covers the sports that matter most in the US, including the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and college sports. You won’t get the enormous market selection you’d find at FanDuel or DraftKings, but for the bets most people actually place, there’s plenty to work with.
Game Winner is Underdog’s version of a moneyline, while spreads and totals work much like they do at a regular sportsbook. There are also futures for championships and other season-long outcomes, plus shorter markets covering individual quarters, halves, periods and innings.
Prediction Markets on Underdog
| Market | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Game Winner | Pick which team wins |
| Spreads | Pick a team to cover the spread |
| Totals | Pick over or under the listed total |
| Futures | Championships and season-long outcomes |
| Period Markets | Quarters, halves, periods and innings |
| Prediction Parlays | Combine multiple team predictions |
| Early Cash Out | Sell eligible positions before settlement |
There are some nice sport-specific options too. MLB includes first 3, 5 and 7 innings markets along with whether a run will be scored in the first inning, while football gives you full-game, half and quarter markets.
Prediction Parlays let you combine multiple team picks, and while they aren’t technically sportsbook parlays, they feel close enough when you’re actually using them, make several predictions, combine them into one entry and you need every leg to hit.
The obvious weakness is depth. If you like digging through alternate lines and dozens of props for the same game, Underdog isn’t going to replace a major sportsbook. If you mostly bet winners, spreads and totals, there’s much less missing.
How Underdog Prediction Picks Work
The biggest adjustment with Underdog is the pricing. Instead of seeing a moneyline like -150 or +130, Prediction Picks are priced between $0 and $1, with the price roughly reflecting how likely the market thinks an outcome is.
If the Chiefs are priced at $0.60 to win, for example, you’re paying 60 cents for each contract. If they win, each contract settles at $1. If they lose, it’s worth $0.
That makes the math pretty easy once you get used to it:
| Contract Price | Market Probability | Profit if Correct |
|---|---|---|
| $0.25 | 25% | $0.75 per contract |
| $0.50 | 50% | $0.50 per contract |
| $0.60 | 60% | $0.40 per contract |
| $0.75 | 75% | $0.25 per contract |
There is one catch: the contract price isn’t necessarily your final cost. Underdog charges exchange fees on Prediction Picks, so comparing a 60-cent contract directly with sportsbook odds without accounting for the fee won’t always give you the full picture.
Prices can also move after you’ve entered a position. If the market moves in your favor, you may be able to cash out for more than you paid without waiting for the game to finish; if it moves against you, the value of your position can fall.
This is where Underdog starts to feel more like a market than a sportsbook. You aren’t locked into a fixed ticket at fixed odds, and while that takes a little getting used to, being able to see what the market currently thinks your position is worth is genuinely useful.
Prediction Picks Fees
Underdog doesn’t hide the fee until after you’ve made your pick. Your total cost is shown before you confirm the trade, including the contract price and applicable exchange fee.
The fee itself can vary depending on the price and size of the position, so there isn’t one flat percentage that applies to every Prediction Pick. For that reason, the number that matters is the final cost shown on the confirmation screen rather than the contract price on its own.
Cashing Out Prediction Picks
You don’t always have to wait for a Prediction Pick to settle. Underdog lets you cash out eligible positions early, with the amount based on what your contracts are worth at that point.
Say you bought a team at $0.40 and the market later moves to $0.70. Rather than waiting to see if the team actually wins, you can potentially sell the position and lock in most of that increase in value.
The same works against you. If your $0.60 position drops to $0.25 after a bad start, you may still be able to get something back instead of riding it all the way to a $0 settlement.
| Cash Out | Availability |
|---|---|
| Prediction Singles | Available on eligible positions |
| Prediction Parlays | Not available |
| Price | Based on current market value |
| Guaranteed | No |
Cash out isn’t guaranteed, though. There needs to be enough liquidity in the market to sell your position, and Underdog can remove the option as a game approaches settlement or while a market is temporarily paused.
For me, this is one of the better parts of the prediction-market setup. Sportsbooks also offer cash out, of course, but here the changing value makes more intuitive sense because you’re effectively selling a position at its current market price rather than accepting whatever early-settlement figure the book offers you.
Underdog Mobile App
Underdog started as a fantasy sports company, and that shows in the app. It’s cleaner than most sportsbook apps, with Prediction Picks sitting alongside Pick’em, Best Ball and other fantasy contests without making the home screen feel overloaded.
Building a prediction is easy to use, you choose your sport, open a market and select the outcome you want. The contract price and potential return are shown before you confirm, while open positions can be tracked from your portfolio.
| Underdog App | Details |
|---|---|
| iOS | Yes |
| Android | Yes |
| Prediction Picks | Yes |
| Fantasy Sports | Yes |
| Early Cash Out | Yes |
| Live Position Tracking | Yes |
The simplicity is probably its biggest strength. FanDuel and DraftKings give you far more to bet on, but they also make you work through considerably more menus to find it. Underdog has less going on, and the app is better for it.
Deposits & Withdrawals at Underdog
The minimum deposit at Underdog is $10. For Prediction Picks, you can fund your account with debit or credit cards, Apple Pay or Trustly. PayPal and Venmo are available elsewhere on Underdog, but funds deposited through them can’t currently be used for Prediction Picks.
| Payment Method | Deposits | Withdrawals |
|---|---|---|
| Debit Card | Yes | Yes |
| Credit Card | Yes | No |
| Apple Pay | Yes | No |
| Trustly | Yes | Yes |
| PayPal | Fantasy only | Yes |
| Venmo | Fantasy only | Yes |
Withdrawals are free with a $10 minimum and Underdog says requests are normally processed within 48 to 72 hours. Debit card payouts typically settle within 24 hours after processing, while Trustly can take another 1 to 3 business days depending on your bank.
It’s not the fastest payout setup we’ve reviewed, particularly with Underdog taking up to three days to approve a request. The actual selection of payment methods is fine, although the restrictions around Prediction Picks make it more complicated than it first appears.
Support at Underdog – Good Help Center, No Phone Support
Underdog handles most customer support online, either through its help center, chat or email. Prediction customers also have their own support channel, which makes sense when the same app contains products that work under very different rules.
The help center is genuinely useful and goes deeper than most, particularly on Prediction Picks, settlement rules, payments and how the exchanges work. Underdog also says formal complaints receive a written response within 48 hours.
We’d still like a proper phone option for account or withdrawal issues, but for everyday questions, the documentation is good enough that you probably won’t need to contact anyone in the first place.
Underdog States and Where You Can Play
Underdog has one of the widest footprints of any sports platform in the US, with at least one product available in 49 states plus Washington DC. What you can actually play depends on where you are, though, since Prediction Picks, Pick’em and Drafts don’t share the same state coverage.
Prediction Picks are currently available in 38 states plus DC, including California and Texas, where conventional online sportsbooks still can’t operate. You need to be 18 or older and physically located in an eligible state when making a prediction.
| Prediction Picks | States |
|---|---|
| Available | AL, AK, AR, CA, CT, DE, FL, GA, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, LA, ME, MN, MO, MT, NE, NH, NM, NY, NC, ND, OK, OR, RI, SC, SD, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA, WV, WI, WY + DC |
| Not Available | AZ, CO, KY, MD, MA, MI, MS, NV, NJ, OH, PA, TN |
There are some interesting exceptions. Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Montana and Washington have Prediction Picks even though Underdog doesn’t offer Pick’em or Drafts there.
For California and Texas users in particular, that’s a big part of Underdog’s appeal. You can trade sports event contracts on familiar markets such as winners, spreads and totals even though FanDuel and DraftKings Sportsbook aren’t available in either state.
Underdog Sportsbook FAQ
Who Should Use Underdog?
Underdog makes the most sense if you want a simpler way to put money behind sports outcomes without digging through hundreds of markets. Prediction Picks cover the winners, spreads and totals most bettors use anyway, while the app is cleaner than the major sportsbooks and the 18+ age limit opens it up to more users.
It’s particularly interesting in California and Texas, where you can’t legally use FanDuel or DraftKings Sportsbook but can access Underdog Prediction Picks.
If you already live in a state with several legal sportsbooks, the case is less clear. FanDuel and DraftKings have much deeper markets, more player props and familiar American odds, so I’d still prefer either as my main betting app.
Underdog works better as something different rather than a direct replacement. The prediction-market model takes a little time to get used to, but once contract pricing makes sense, the actual experience is refreshingly straightforward.
