American vs Decimal vs Fractional Odds

Betting odds can look different depending on the sportsbook, but all three formats represent the same potential payout.

  • American odds are standard in the US. Positive odds show how much profit you’d make on a $100 bet, while negative odds show how much you need to wager to win $100.
  • Decimal odds show your total return for every $1 wagered, including your stake. Multiply the decimal odds by your stake to calculate the payout.
  • Fractional odds show potential profit relative to your stake. Odds of 3/1 mean you could win $3 for every $1 wagered.

What Is Implied Probability?

Implied probability is the chance of winning represented by the betting odds. It helps you understand how likely an outcome needs to be for a bet to offer value.

For example, +150 odds have an implied probability of 40%. If you consistently win more than 40% of your bets at those odds, you’d make a profit over time.

Note that implied probability isn’t necessarily the actual chance of winning. Sportsbooks include a margin in their odds, known as the vig or juice, which affects the percentages.

For better comparisons, you can use our No-Vig Calculator to remove that margin and estimate fair odds.
