Bonus bets (also called free bets) commonly exclude the promotional stake from a winning payout. Select the rule that matches your offer. Payout is not a guaranteed cash value; withdrawal, qualifying bets, and other promotional restrictions depend on the offer. Taxes and hedging are excluded. Figures are rounded estimates.

What Is a Bonus Bet?

A bonus bet, sometimes called a free bet, is a promotional wager offered by a sportsbook. Instead of using your own money, you receive a betting credit that can be placed on an eligible sporting event.

Sportsbooks such as FanDuel, BetMGM and Caesars offer different types of betting promotions, but the rules aren’t always the same. The most important distinction is whether the bonus stake is returned when your bet wins.

With a regular cash bet, both your winnings and original stake are paid back. Many bonus bets only pay the winnings, meaning the promotional amount itself is not included in your return.

How Much Can You Win From a Bonus Bet?

Let’s say you receive a $50 bonus bet and place it on an NFL team at +200. Here’s how the payout changes depending on whether the promotional stake is returned:

Stake not returnedStake returned
Bonus amount$50$50
Betting odds+200+200
Winnings$100$100
Returned bonus stake$0$50
Total payout$100$150

With a stake-not-returned bonus, you receive $100 in winnings. If the offer returns the stake, your total payout is $150, although the returned $50 may remain promotional credit rather than withdrawable cash.
