As it happened

NHL – On the 12th of March the NHL was put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic and a decision was taken to scrap the regular season and proceed with the Stanley Cup playoffs. The 12 best teams from each conference played in an expanded playoff format in Toronto and Edmonton. On the 28th of September, almost two and half months later than normal, the Stanley Cup winner of the 2019/20 season was crowned when Tampa Bay Lightnings won their second ever Stanley Cup.

MLB – The MLB season started on the 23rd of July, four months after its original beginning. Instead of the 162-game regular season it was decided to shorten the season down to 60 games. The postseason started in the end of September which led up to the MLB World Series in October. Winner of the MLB World Series 2020 was Los Angeles Dodgers who managed to defeat Tampa Bay Rays, their first title since 1988.

NBA – The NBA season 2019/20 was the longest NBA season that has ever been played. 355 days, that’s how long time it was between the first game of the regular season until the final game of the playoffs. In the NBA Final Miami Dolphins faced LA Lakers, two teams who had shown an impressive strength on their way to the final. We got to see six games in the final before LA Lakers lifted the trophy and was crowned champions for the 17th time.

What’s next

MLS – Not many games left of the regular season in the MLS. Last season’s dominant teams, Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders, look just as strong as before and are two of the candidates to win the MLS Cup later in December. The regular season will end on the 8th of November and then the Playoffs starts. 10 teams from the Eastern Conference and 8 teams from the Western Conference will advance to the Playoffs. NFL – Still some way to go for the NFL teams before its time for the postseason matches. The regular season will run until beginning of January. With all other major leagues finished by December, the NFL will be the go-to league for all sports fans. Will Kansas City Chiefs defend their position as champions or will a team from the Eastern Conference raise the trophy this time?
