This is the Players Championship
The first edition of the Players Championship was held in 1974 and this year’s tournament will be the 48th edition. The tournament has been played in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, at TPC Sawgrass since 1982, an iconic and popular golf course with a fantastic surrounding nature. The Players Championship is as of today the tournament that offers the highest amount of prize money. In 2020 the prize fund was about $15 million, an amount that is increasing for every year.

The Players Championship is a 72 par tournament with the length of 7189 yards. The current champion is Rory McIllroy who managed to bring home the trophy last year with a 16 under par run. There will be a total of 144 players participating in this year’s tournament, including the majority of the world’s best golf players.
Of the tournament’s eight previous editions there have been four winners with US nationality. Webb Simpson (2018), Rickie Fowler (2015), Tiger Woods (2013) and Matt Kuchar (2012) have all been winners of the Players Championship. Jack Nicklaus is the current record holder of most tournament wins, 1974, 1976 and 1978.

Just as always we can expect an eventful tournament where it’s going to be a real battle for the champions trophy. The names listed below are some of the major favorites to win, but a lot can happen. Rory McIlroy has a trophy to defend but will face tough opposition as he goes up against Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and a list of other top level players. McIlroy’s performances during the last 12 months have been far away from the levels we’re used to. The competition will be extremely tough as he chases his second Players Championship trophy.
