Roland Garros – Highlight of the year

Ask any players and they will all say the same, there’s no other tournament like Roland Garros. The history of the tournament, the prestige and the hype and engagement from fans and experts is what make this tournament so special. Looking at the previous French Open champions it’s safe to say that this is a tournament with the very best players. The tournament has been played for more than 130 years and has a history steeped in traditions memorable games.
The French Open was recognized as a Grand Slam tournament back in 1924. It’s the only Grand Slam tournament played on clay, which is one of the reasons it’s considered as the most physically demanding Grand Slam tournament. The clay surface makes the ball bounce higher and therefore slowing down its speed, making it hard for players whose biggest strengths are the serves and volleys. At the same time, it’s benefiting players whose movement and pace are top of the game. As the clay slows down the ball It gives more time for the fast players to find good positions in order to hit back and build a point. Some of the most iconic players who’ve had great success on the clay surface are Rafael Nadal, Björn Borg, Ivan Lendl and Justine Henin.

The French Open is played at the Stade Roland Garros, a mecca for all tennis players. The tennis complex consists of 20 courts where the main court is named Court Philippe Chatrier. Court Philippe Chatrier was built in 1928 and underwent a major renovation in 2019. The court has a capacity of around 15 000 and is named after the former president of the French tennis association. The two other major courts that’re being used during the French Open are Court Suzanne Lenglen and Court Simonne Mathieu.

The 2021 French Open will begin on May 30th and run through June 13th. Once the TV and live streaming information is made official it will be found in the match list above. The other two Grand Slam tournaments left to be played this year is Wimbledon and the US Open. You can find information on any tennis tournament shown live on TV or live streaming here. The majority of fans and experts hold Rafael Nadal as the best player to ever play on clay surface. With his ordinary movement and athleticism he’s a player made for the slow-playing surface. The Spaniard has won the last four French Open with Novak Djokovic (2016) being the last player to beat Nadal’s supreme record. Previous Winners – Women’s Singles
